The US Supreme Court refused Tuesday to block a law allowing same-sex marriages in Washington DC, clearing the way for the legislation to go into effect Wednesday.

Chief Justice John Roberts, in a three-page opinion that sidestepped the legal issues involved, said the matter should be decided by local courts and decision makers in the US capital city.

Roberts rejected a petition by opponents of gay marriage for a stay that would have prevented the law from taking effect.

"Without addressing the merits of petitioners' underlying claim... I conclude that a stay is not warranted, Roberts wrote.

Roberts responded to the emergency petition but said the full court would be "unlikely" to hear the case as presented.

Finally the SCOTUS does something that make sense, quite unlike making corporations "people"

Yeah, why should Gay people be spared the misery of marriage the rest of us have to endure.

The ruling clears the path for same-sex couples to begin applying for marriage licenses as early as Wednesday in the city, which will join the states of Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire in allow gay marriage.

What is evil or a sin to you, may not be evil or a sin to others.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you believe that someone should not love another, and want to stop them from that end, aren't you asking that they do the same to you?

For this specific issue, I see no logical reason why two people who love each other cannot enter into a contract to each other.

Now, as far as the religious end of this goes, I don't believe that any church should be forced to marry gay couples if it is against their religious beliefs. If your religion forbids gay marriage, then so be it. That is your belief, your entitled to that belief.

But the state is not the church, and I believe that the state should allow marriage between two people that love each other, no matter what sexual orientation they are. How would it affect me? It won't. My life will not be changed one single bit by allowing homosexual marriage. But, it may impact a childhood friend of mine, she might want to marry her girlfriend. Which if that makes her happy, than I am all for it.

I am glad the SCOTUS refuses to block the ruling of D.C. It is a good thing for everyone involved, your religion, sorry to say, is not involved.

This law was voted into being and passed a Congressional review period. Then, a few people decided to sign a petition against it and took it to the Supreme Court. They turned it away, as the law was already passed.

On December 1, 2009 the act passed by a vote of 11-2 on its first reading. The second reading was voted on December 15, 2009 where the measure was again passed by a vote of 11-2. The bill received the mayor's signature one week later and had to survive a 30-day congressional review period before becoming law.

Maybe I misunderstood your post, but how does that equate to the people having spoken and been ignored? Quite the contrary, the people have spoken and been heard. And the SC isn't going to let a few paranoids with a petition walk over the rights of the people. The SC defended the Constitution of this country.
