Because political candidates have to cater to the interests of the voting mass, popularity and media image become more important than speaking the truth to the people. The product is a vast media empire where opinions, views and perspectives are twisted into absurdum, so that the smiling idiots we see on television can fool us into voting for their campaign. Democracy is legalized fraud.

Democracy is political entertainment. The masses simply can't get enough; we've had a disastrous war in Iraq/Afghan that is leading nowhere, an economy that's about to go into recession, increased ethnic conflicts and several reports of organized lobbying, yet we insist on more.

Good post. What people don't understand is the Federal Code. We could assemble Grand Juries of Citizens and bring charges of Misprison of Treason, Simple Treason, Collusion, Fraud, Sedition, Insurrection and so many others, upon these "government/corporate" officials for their involvement in the Drug trade, Financial scams, Health care and Housing fraud and so many other things. But do we have the nads for it? Will anyone actually take the initiative to start the process seeing as others have been murdered for even bringing it up or investigating the truth. Disinfo people here will want proof. They don't want to dig into it themselves for fear of actually learning something or doing some leg work. Sad really. Great Americans they are aren't they?

I guess we will wait patiently for something to happen, if it ever does, I doubt it. Stealthy encroachment and then fade to black.

We sadly have a one party system masquerading as a two party system.

The only way this country has a chance to recover is an Independent party that can make sweeping changes across the board. Change will never happen with the corrupt system we have in place. The government has become to fat and we need to take back what is rightfully ours!

We have only ourselves to blame, but we can make it what WE want once again. We are imploding people, the time is now or we are going to look like Greece in a couple of years. When is enough is enough?!

It is amazing to me that only4 years ago the Democrats were ranting and raving over the reconciliation process - declaring it a consitutional crisis, an affront to the founding fathers and an abrogation of democracy. Yet, today they are doing EXACTLY what they railed against.

Good point.. If people vote in a statist/fascist like Barack Obama, you're gonna get goon-squad type actions, just like this one.

But to clarify, the reconciliation process has been used previously to effect movement in budget bills, or components thereof. NEVER has it been used to ram through legislation that would effectively hamstring an industry that comprises one-sixth of our economy.

Only statists/fascists like Pelosi and Obama would do something like that.

Whether or not this vote is good for someone's career could just mean that the people voting will lose their largest campaign contributors (e.g. corporations that have invested interest in private health care). You can bet there's plenty lobbyists who are pushing for a NO vote .
On a related side-point, I live in a country that has guaranteed health care for all citizens and have to admit it is and always has been pretty great to know a simple (or severe) injury will never put me in the poor-house.

This has been true since the beginning of our democracy, which in fact was never one in the first place.

From the start with George Washington the government was filled with lies and back then (and up to this past century) the laws regarding who could run, for how long, and who appointed who were fuzzy.

Now, even with the laws intact the corruption still stands and is worsening, so I agree with you. But to say that this is just beginning now, the US 'no longer be ran by representatives of the people' is wrong... it's been happening since the beginning of our countries creation.

Nonetheless this is not a rant against the OP, because like I said I completely agree.

These Congress-vermin continue to ignore the will of the people, and are railroading us into a socialist era.

Obviously the insurance industry OWNS Obama, Pelosi, Reed, and those others behind Obamacare. This provides no care and only revenue, and hooks into our flesh for decades.

Full-court press by two of the three branches of government to take more control of our lives. Bastards!

Really? We need ANOTHER reason? It's been obvious for quite some time now how out of control the U.S. is.

Yes, the government is out of control.

Not enough rodeo clowns to control the runaway bulls. In fact, the bulls now outnumber the rodeo clowns.
Why are we clowns still in the pen with them?
Isn't it funny, but we rodeo clowns FEED the bulls. Thought we had control of the bulls...surely the bulls knew where their FOOD comes from and they know we clowns don't HAVE to feed them.
Oh, but, being clowns, we forget...
THEY ARE JUST BULLS.

And, we are JUST clowns.

Moral: When dealing with bulls, don't inflict pain upon their privates unless you have enough rodeo clowns to control them. If not, don't even think about getting into the pen with them.

Divide and Conquer. It is beyound my comprehension how anyone raised in this country could have ever believed there was or ever have been a difference between Republicans and Democrats. It is the two-headed beast created for distraction. Your distraction !

Maybe not. There are "problems" with hoping for a 3rd party to solve anything:
(1) lack of money
(2) would split the vote, possibly causing the election of the worst alternative
(3) possible usurption of the 3rd party by elecments of the other two

IMO the best is to locate/recruit "independent" minded persons whom you know to run for office within the 2-party system. CHANGE FROM WITHIN. Beat them at their own game, not a new game.

Looking at your political system from North of the border, I would like to point out something that has been consistently true in the USA since President Kennedy's assassination and indeed back to Woodrow Wilson and in part back to the War Between the States: whatever the government serves up as "the most important" matter facing the USA is in fact something closer to 'smoke and mirrors' so as to distract you from the truly evil and horrendous thing afoot.

The question for all of you in the USA should be what is the real issue being hidden by all of this staged 'soap opera' with ugly actors called 'the Healthcare Debate'. What is it that the House and Senate & the Executive Branch are hiding from the USAmerican citizenry?

I tell you sincerely that the Healthcare legislation is not the besetting problem of your nation. The difficult task is to puzzle out what the Democrats and Republicans hope you the Citizenry are not noticing.

I (almost fondly) remember sitting in a bar in St. Louis when Al Gore was projected as the winner of the 2000 presidential election. My friend and I ordered a shot of tequila to celebrate Gore and America's next 4 years, and before our drink arrived the Florida projection was retracted.

In the cab, on the way back to our apartment, the feeling of dread was overwhelming as I listened to our cabbie, a black man, tell us how they had turned him away from the polling station. He was mad as hell, and he hadn't been the only black person turned away from a polling station that day.

"We elected these people into office."

Maybe.

IMO US Elections are no different than high-profile professional sporting events. They are rigged, and nobody would ever say so in fear of being ostracised by peers/co-works/family.

Kind of like all those crazy, and I mean CRAZY coincidences surrounding 9/11.

Ridiculous statement. This is a democratic republic. We elected these people into office. They are our voices.

If you really believe in the people having a voice, you will accept and respect the decisions of your elected representatives.

no, you wish it was.

it was founded a republic, and is now a democracy... or some bizarre perversion of democracy.

A public option health care bill is something that is considered to be a right in every other industrial country. Why do you believe it is in our common interest to not have a plan for all Americans?

You are paying for mine and I'm generally happy for it. (USDVA) It allowed me to retire a little bit early and gives me the chance to tell you that it is foolish to deny health care to the population.

I don't know of any other sector that is as badly managed or fraught with fraud as our current system of supplying health care. Why would you want to perpetuate it? Do you have some arcane thought process that allows for this current unsteady state?

No offense but perhaps instead of looking at this as a matter of BIG GOVERNMENT taking over, consider it from the altruistic, humane and EFFICIENCY standards. A blind devotion to a political stance when life and death are being measured is morally deficient.

Hell no, no way is healthcare a right. Human rights are alienable, meaning God given. The population of the US is 305 Million, and 138 Million are employed. I am NOT paying for medical bills of my neighbor. I can't afford it. Where do you think the money comes from, thin air?

What about the rest of the world? If healthcare is a human right, then are we to pay for healthcare for the rest of the Billions in the world?

Most health problems are brought upon ourselves. Stroke and heart disease are top killers in the US but it kills the fat and lazy. Most of us are overweight and sedentary. I'm not paying the medical bills of some fat lazy smoking alcoholic drug user that emulated an episode of jackass. Let him study instead of party and work to pay his own damn insurance.

Your country does so many terrible things with your tax money. They have committed atrocities against the human race and the majority of your people (statistically) have voiced an opinion against it. By the way, your great-grandchildren will still be paying for those atrocities in taxes. There's plenty of money there for health care if private interests are ejected from your political process . A healthy population is a productive population. Clearly you have never found yourself in in need of help without the insurance to pay for it. Not everyone who needs help was on drugs emulating, jackass.
