Personally I think its an unnecessary grading system (and I hate blue, lol). We all know the reason its there... to entice members into making valuable contributions to the website. But there are those who contribute without starting threads, by making exceptional posts in the threads of others. Surely these members don't have to have the stigma of an empty FC bar attached to their profile if they don't want to?

That being said...

I fully support the option of being able to hide or show your FC bar. Not all of us like it and what it does to the forum boards. With the coming revamp of the site surely there's a chance that such a simple option could be implemented?

Wouldn't a completely option-based mini-profile be best? One where you can add what you want people to see everytime you post and things that you can hide.

For example, if I want people to see my 'Apprentice Contributor' tag I should be able to opt into it. If I want people to see my stars and flags on my mini-profile every time I post, same thing. But I don't want people to see the number of my posts so that I'll leave out of my mini-profile.

Anyone see what I'm getting at? That would be a perfect world.

In the spirit of the request
Here it will be addressed
What you ask for is not feasible
Some would say it is not reasonable
But the reason we're not beholding
To your request is because of the coding
It would mean re-writing the board
Which is time that SO can't afford
So I'm sorry we cannot assist you
In attempting to sort out your issue
But if your posts are all just and true
One day your whole bar will turn blue

You know he's been thinking of how to write this since this thread went up and only now has he completed his post.

To make the dreaded blue bar flee,
All we merely look at rowspan=3,
We take away the image source,
Which makes some of us hoarse,
Something like files.abovetopsecret.com...pee n gee!

The option to make this thing become,
Keeps us far from a check error sum,
We add code to the CSS,
Not to make it a mess,
Which will keep some of us from being glum.

Whilst not a throwaway frivolous affair,
Whilst upgrading you could look to dare,
An option to person profile,
Not looked at by the sheepishly docile,
The solutions been presented - So there!

Cheers for the rhyme nevermore - it made my day

I think we both know that not all that's blue is 'deserved' around here, that's kind of where my beef's at (I've also been more active today since thinking that is could be taken away - I'm not the only one who cares not for the FCB).

If possible could you nullify flags from this thread and turn my colouring on my bar grey please? (If what Spy66 said earlier is correct).

Again thanks for the rhyme.

And thanks to everyone else who chipped in, I am genuine that I don't need no stinkin (blue) badges and would like the option to opt out of having them.

Still, we'll see how it goes - but don't take this as a definitive no - just one that's been presented with a solution :0

When I read posts, I couldn't care less how many flags the posting member has. I care only about the content of the post.

Here is my Contribution.....

Remove my Flag Contribution level please
Because I will never make it past the E's.
Plus I know it's a sight for sore eyes
and I'm worried people will compare it to penis size.

What happens after blue does it then turn red
and add to the alter ego playing out in your head.
It's all part of the act part of the mask
nothing to do with the questions we come here to ask.

This is the reason I don't like the flagbar either. I would be very, very happy to see it go. I understand that the owners of ATS want to encourage members to start threads, but sadly the flagbar also makes some posters who make excellent posts in other people's thread seem like they hardly contribute anything at all to ATS. Some of the best posters around (at least the best in my opinion) have almost empty flagbars.

I think the system is very unfair, and I am not sure how wise it is. I have noticed that many long standing members seem to have disappeared from ATS lately. Perhaps it has absolutely nothing to do with the flagbar. But I would not be surprised if at least some of those members weren't too happy about a flagbar that made them seem like complete noobs despite the fact that they had made thousands of quality posts over several years.

If ATS want to make it worthwhile for people to continue to come here and read and participate in threads, the forum needs quality POSTERS in general. Not only thread STARTERS.

@ TheBandit785:
I understand perfectly why you don't care about how many flags a poster has... I ignore it too, actually. But the bar is still there. And it is still unfair. It focuses ONLY on how many flags the member has. And I have seen trolls and hoaxers receiving hundreds and hundreds of flags for completely outrageous threads. Perhaps some of those trolls even were a little encouraged by the flagbar system..?

On top of the fact that it leads to many useless threads being created in attempts to gain threads.

So, if I get this correctly, you're complaining about a feature, to reward you.

Gaining said reward anyway, and claiming you do not want it, to the Moderators.

And, it all has to do with your avatar's pink Frisbee?

Does that about some it up?

Hey, Wuk, next time you spout off about me and pimping out threads for flags, I'm going to post a reply, directly to m0r1arty's profile.

Flag'em all, ATS, flag'em all.

I just don't understand. Why remove your flag bar? Isn't it something to represent the threads that one works hard on to become an interesting one?

A bit of blue in my flagbar would be nice but I just don't seem to bring up things of interest to people, even when I think they might be.

You should be glad to get something on the bar at least.
I know I would!

I liked the post count better.. not all of us start threads.. but what ever, the arguments been had many times, the admins love their flags.

Didn't there used to be a point system on ATS? What ever happened to that?

There is a point system on ATS.

It is hidden in the member's profile, doesn't show in posts.

Take your flags like a man, or stop writing things we all consider worthy of flagging.

Its ultimately your own fault.

Try making posts that suck, and perhaps nobody will be taken by your winning personality and awardable canter.

With that said...flag for you, sunshine!

See you in the pit...

Hugs.

Again thanks all for your replies of support or otherwise. It's through collective action that we can enable this (I've mentioned how to do it in my prior poem).

As many of you have stated there are many who contribute lots to this site, they just don't start that many threads and don't receive the 'due reward' that some feel is necessary. I'd like to be able to have those who wish to have their FCBs on display to remain to have them so. I just feel pretty disgusted by having one slung around my neck.

Reward...not so much. When the reward bar is full it either aligns me with a very few excellent posters who are of real worth to this site or aligns me with those who are purely here for the sensational, untrue and downright squalid in their ethical outlook.

Here's a nice lil' thread detailing how to get 'flags and stars' - notice how the member is less than a month in the door and teaching propaganda techniques to boost this supposed 'reward'?

I prefer that interesting threads remain at the top, the search system works to find topics or subjects of interest and that a members merit is based on what they say not how many stars they got for saying it.

Now I'm not denying anyone their 'due'. If someone wants to keep their bar system then great! Bully for them and more to them for doing so. I just don't find it to be a true indicator of someone's 'worth' in a thread. As mentioned earlier there are Content Experts who I will give a nod of distinction towards and many posters who may or may not be blue barred but have sound reasoning with their attitudes - but it takes time to know the wheat from the chaff and the blue bar ain't no indicator of what you'll find once you've spent that time.

Give us a kill switch and let those who choose to use it use it.

Even if I had blue goo coming out of every orifice I'd still want this option. It's not perhaps a global social justice issue, but it's still a social justice issue.

I wish there was an option to give you two flags.

Just you...

You wheesht you!

Unless you want more aliens, prophets and loonies badging up as well - they're the ones who crave attention (Ok we all do, but I like mine to be from mutual respect).

You might like your groupies and your screaming fans as items of affection but I'll take a French nun who specialises in Descartes and Sartre and break her with my charm by meeting her in the middle (and then fireman lift her back to mine).

I am not a number, I am a free man!!

Be seeing you.

You do realize sarcasm is just one service I offer on ATS, right?

Do not worry, I did not flag this thread.

I do see your point and I concur, a reward yes, but not for banality.

Come on by any of my threads as long as you flag them.

Kidding, you're welcome, regardless if you flag them.

Flagged yours from your signature if it helps :p

Yeah my sarcasm detector goes all wonky when I'm in a multi-cultural field, on British boards I'm fine (In fact I prefer it due to the standard rapier wit), on American boards;fine (Just tone it right down), Aussie boards I'm good (mix and match) but add them and the rest of the world together and I'm left scrabbling for sanity

The business boards sure ain't getting a lot of attention today...from those in the know, this is really quite easy guys and will fit in nicely with the refit!
