Commander was drunk on Vodka one night, ordered his brigade to mount up and march! For Mother Russia!!

So the brigade got to their location, only to realize the commander had passed out and forgot to give orders to send fuel for the tanks or supplies for the men. After 2 days of waiting for further orders, and the snows beginning to fall, the soldiers all walked home to upset wives.

The Commander, not having any official orders to move so many tanks, had no excuse to order the large quantity of replacement fuel he needed to return the tanks to base, and so he decided to just wait until spring when normal operations start up again. He's been drunk ever since.

wow... if I had come by abandon russian tanks, I would definitely take one for a spin. A track vehicle in the mud sounds like fun to me.

Maybe they're radioactive Chernobyl tanks.

I think they would do quite nicely for any army that is not planning on going up against the US. The armies of Zim, South Africa and probably every other African country would sell their souls to own them.

Then they would invade every neighbouring country with virtual impunity.

For about a week anyway - till they realise they cannot fix them or pay for the fuel. More abandoned tanks.

I'd fill them with millions of poppy seed so if they ever came to be used by 'questionable' buyers they would simply shoot out a million poppies into the battlefield.

Are you telling me that in the vast expanse that is Russia, there is no warehouse space or anything of the sort on government land that can't be found?

Can you imagine a few hundred tanks being driven into the forest, parked, and then they have the soldiers march out. Sounds like a hell of a mission.

At first I was thinking military coup, but its too far from the capital.

They are near Kazakhstan, but Russia has no beef with them.

Is there a new "Tom Clancy" film in the works, by any chance??? "Red Storm Rusting" perhaps.....

Maybe they are tanks they want to get rid of. The best way to get rid of them? Use them for targets for the air force. Pile up a bunch of old tanks in the woods, kind of out of the way, build a nice bombing range, move the tanks out there and blow them up. Sound like a plan to me.

They were waiting to be relocated to Western Europe. If those meddling kids didn't find the invasion forc.. err I mean the abandoned tanks, they would spearhead their way through Poland, Germany, and France in a matter of weeks. It's a good thing they missed the Bear Cavalry which was stationed just a mile down the road near the outhouse. As long as they remain hidden the invasio... err relocation can continue as planned. No better way to disguise an invasion force than claim it is abandoned property. What are those 10,000 tanks and 2,000 jets doing massing on Poland's border? Ah - it's just a large scrapping operation. Wait untill you learn the truth about the supposed "rusting" submarines in the Barents Sea. And the MIR spacestation never became decomissioned either - it was a cover story once the plasma beams were installed. Genious

In all seriousness it was likely just a lapse in transport management and logistics. Not so much incompetence, as lack of concern. Russia has a high surplus of older tanks and other armor, and sometimes the command structure simply disregards it and lets the officers plan relocations and transport themselves without oversight. The officers might not have the proper means to do it or may have more immediate priorities.
