This makes me wonder, that after so many Pacific rim earthquakes, why these buoys are not reporting any data.

The weather buoys are not equipped to sense tsunami, only swells and wind waves. There are special buoys to detect the passage of tsunami.

A 75 FOOT tsunami buoy report came from 140 nm SE of Honolulu, Hawaii.

The buoy dropped about 60 ft, then rose about 75 ft. That seems like one hell of a tsunami headed for Honolulu. Does this mean the buoy saw a wave 135 ft tall when it was dropped down 60 ft?

I don't know if this is predicting an average of 15, or if it means a lot bigger than reported.

I hope this is wrong, but here's the link to the report:

Hilo Bay faces NE with a breakwater established about two miles from shore. It is likely that the wave passed by. Oahu, however, should receive the brunt of the effects at Waikiki Beach, don't you think?

That location is on the safe side of the big island, not in the path of the tsunami. If you are getting a 3 ft effect there, it will be much worse on the receiving side of Oahu, I suppose. What do you think?

Hilo is directly facing Chile.

Here it is at Kahului harbor, Maui. About 3 feet.
Kahului

Looks like it is maintaining a consistent reading on the safe sides of the islands.
Can't wait to see the effect at Oahu. If an 8.8 doesn't get some real tidal effects, what the heck....

There is no "safe side"
Hilo and Kahului are on the east side of each island, facing Chile.

Here's your reference map for the safe side reading on the first report: maps.google.com...,+hawaii&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US
fficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Kawaihae,+HI&gl=us&ei= TZmJS6zYHZPysgP7hbWGAw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CAgQ8gEwAA

Here's for the second at Kahului: maps.google.com...,+hawaii&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US
fficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Kahului,+HI&gl=us&ei=0p mJS-noDobUtgOs9ZmGAw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CA8Q8gEwAA

Clearly not in the direct path, but either missed or sideswiped.

Did you check Hilo?
A tsunami is not a normal wave, it bends and wraps.

I wouldn't get comfortable with the three foot wave. It's the third tidal wave in 1960 that did the most damage. These precursors are a warmup. The water is going out again......as of ten min ago.

Think about the buoy. It dropped 60 ft, then raised 75 ft. Can you imagine, you're in a boat at the bottom of that trough.... I'd crap my pants.

5:19 p.m. ET: Reports coming out of Hawaii indicate that the first waves of tsunami activity, the direct result of the castostrophic earthquake to hit Chile last night, has reached the islands.

An NBC affiliate in Hawaii, KGMB, just confirmed from local weather sources and eyewitnesses that waves roughly three feet high have rolled through. Further, they're reporting that the surges are getting more powerful and that waters are receding into the ocean again, indicating that another wave is forthcoming. Additionally, they urged local residents to keep in mind that it was the third wave of a tsunami in 1960 that caused the most devastation.

5:25 p.m. ET: At 5:10pm Eastern time, The Pacific Tsunami Warning center reported that a 5.6-foot tsunami surge was recorded in Hawaii's Hilo Bay. That's the protected side.
