The tsunami is expected to hit the Big Island of Hawaii in about an hour...

They are still not sure what size the waves will be....preparation is going very smooth, people seem to be calm.

Probably a dumb question, but

Wouldn't it be possible to fly out a scouting plane to kinda get an estimate of the waves?

the tsnunami would not start getting high until it came towards shore as the sea bed pushes the volume of water up.

There is no wave as it travels, a boat in the ocean would not see a ripple.

Its only as it appraoches land , and the water Shallows, the main body of the wave stays intact, and rises up.

Appreciate the knowledge.

I rather ask a dumb question than to be dumb the rest of my life.

I think it is a very valid question. But like the others explained, it is hard to "see" it is a horizontal movement of water. More like a pool being passed along as oppossed to a wave.

It kinda acts like a regular wave when it hits shallow water. Teh sudden land makes it gather on top of itself and move in.

the big sign a tsunami is going to hit is if the shore water suddenly retracts.

Lets just pray Hawaii doesn't get harmed. And all we have seen is it for death and destruction.

Its better to ask questions rather tha just post stuff that is nonsense like some on here.

so u did the right thing.

As Nixie said, lets pray its not a very powerful waves when it hits and hope everyone will be ok.

thoughts are still going out to those who have died and the familys who have the homes and lives wrecked from the earthquake at Chile.

A boat on the ocean would just be buoyed up softly for a moment anywhere
from a few centimeters to maybe 2 m at the most without capsizing.

Thirty five (35) min till first wave est. arrival

Then roughly every twenty min or so.

Not me talking about it, interesting theory I wonder if it would work. Would take a nuke I imagine.

ricardoricafort: ..come on its about time we use these weapons for a very good purpose and not for war, but for real defense like this tsunami....bomb the waves to create a counter-force then will lessen its strength and diffuse tsunami...
