Nice call, good thread!

Here is a map of South America, note the proximity of Chile to Argentina and the Falkland Islands.

www.fhlfavorites.info...

If occupation does happen, you could see why Chile would be an excellent point of leverage for your military. Chile runs the entire length of Argentina.

It is a weird coincidence that the earthquake happened now with the Britian/Argentina dispute, but lets not get carried away with earthquake weapons. Both Chile and Japan are located on the "Ring of Fire," so seismic activity is more than expected.

Just heard earthquake in Chile. I googled quickly and came to this site www.thefreelibrary.com...

It looks like Britain is claiming the whole of Antartica. A lot of oil there. US and UK trying to destabilize and warning Chile to stay away from the claim?
Remember folks back in 1982, the Falklands/MAlvinas war between UK and Argentina, were never publicised as war for oil. It was already known then that Antantarica has huge deposits of minerals and oil.
Oil already discovered in Haiti, back in 1960. It was kept underground because of Mideast and Libyan oil already cheap and abundant. Now with "oil shortage" it's time to explore the oil in Antartica (and Haiti)

Relax folks, take a few deep breathes

This EQ happened away from a Major centre , there will be more deaths

on Monday from people driving to work in the US , than this.

Not every "shake" or "breeze" means the End of Times.

I don't think so. I really don't.

Comparing Chili to Haiti is like comparing Seattle to Detroit [ No offense to the motor city, it's just an analogy]

I think even Obama knows that Chili has ALOT more money and recources to take care of this disaster then Haiti ever did.

And Chavez is this close to having a fistfight with the Queen over the Falklands [ didn't this also happen in the 80's ?] I don't think he gives a rats a** about Chili. Last time I checked there was no major oil reserve in Chili.

As for the worries about the U.S. wanting Chili as a strategic military stronghold? Are you serious? I could understand the U.K. wanting it, but not us. As far as the U.S. being concerned about proptecting our interests around the world, Chili is in the middle of B.F.E.

Peace

More deaths driving to work in one day than an 8.8 magnitude earthquake? No possible way.

The Richter magnitude scale assigns a single number to quantify the amount of seismic energy released by an earthquake. It is a base-10 logarithmic scale obtained by calculating the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude of the largest displacement from zero on a Wood–Anderson torsion seismometer output. So, for example, an earthquake that measures 5.0 on the Richter scale has a shaking amplitude 10 times larger than one that measures 4.0.

en.wikipedia.org...

So I believe, if I did this right, the Chilean earthquake of 8.8 is almost 100x worse than the Haiti quake of 7.0. That means, even if they were prepared, there will still be a great number deaths.

I also found that the largest earthquake ever recorded was the 1960 Valdivia earthquake or Great Chilean Earthquake. It had a magnitude of 9.5! So Chile does have a long history of disastrous earthquakes.

The population density of Chili, on average, is 17 people per square km. With the densest population at 50 people per square km.

Haiti on the other hand has an average of 254 people per square km. It is the most densley populated country in the western Hemisphere. Haiti is not on a major fault line, Chili is. Chili is ALOT more prepared for this sort of thing then Haiti ever will be..

So yes, it is plausible that there won't be nearly as many deaths in Chili then there was in Haiti.

The difference between Haiti and Chile is that the earthquake and Chile shifted much more land than the Haiti one. Basically the extent of the earthquake was much larger in Chile than Haiti, thus the damage caused would be less severe. Because the size of the earthquake was MUCH smaller in Haiti, it did much more damage even though the Chile earthquake was higher on the Richter scale.

Furthermore, Chile is not only rather experienced and prepared for earthquakes, but Chile is far away from an impoverished third world nation.

Which is why I can guarantee you that the death toll will be much smaller in Chile than Haiti. In fact I'll be surprised if it went past 5000 deaths.

B.T.W. Chili has a population of roughly 16 million, Haiti.......10 million.

Do the math.

That makes absolutely zero sense. Are you talking about the overall movement of the entire technoic plate moving all at once?

Yes, I know Chile has a history of earthquakes and most likely built their buildings accrodingly. I said they were prepared because of their geographic location on the Ring of Fire. So that will help keep their death toll down.

A majority of the people in South America still can only afford to live in shacks. Chile may be closer to a 1st world country, but they still do have shantytowns. I doubt those are built with earthquake rated safety standards. The earthquake happened in the middle of the night there, most would have been asleep.

Population denisty does play an important role, but if big cities felt the tremors, the people that live in the shantyvilles, in the outskirts of the cities, would be most affected. So yes, the death toll will probably be less than Haiti's because Haiti was so poor and unprepared. But to say more people would die driving to work in the U.S. on Monday, I think is a bit of a stretch. Though, in Texas we do have guardrail damage every day on the highways.

B.T.W. Chili has a population of roughly 16 million, Haiti.......10 million.
Do the math.

Wouldn't that mean that there could possibly be more people affected?

I guess occupation means helping people in a moment of crisis.

The reason it runs so smoothly is the 82nd Airborne, but they're leaving soon. There are around 13, 000 American troops currently in Haiti; that's down from the 20,000 two weeks ago; which could mean bad news for the thousands of Haitians who rely on them to keep the peace and supply lines flowing.

United Nations troops will be replacing U.S. Troops and that could be a problem in Port-au-Prince were many Haitians don't trust the U.N.

www.digtriad.com...

Well, at least Haiti will now soon be occupied(helped) by UN troops rather than US troops.

Based on population only. Also take into consideration Chili is bigger in size than Haiti, hence the density difference.

I agree with you that Sean 48 was exagerrating the death toll of rush hour traffic, but I still think the death toll in Chili will be far less than Haiti and there will be no need for "occupation"
