I'd say the Nazca plate is sliding under the pacific plate.

an earth quake of that magnitude would have created a far greater tsunami than 3 - 5 feet unless the force was directed towards the west.

I told my husband early friday afternoon that a big one was coming. I knew it! I have a blind dog, the day of the Haiti quake she was acting very strange and kept hiding under a cover or under the bed or table. I also had strong stomach pains today which would indicate the Chile area if you believe that humans and animals can 'feel' one coming as I do. A 7 in Japan and now an 8.8

edit to add: I got excited and forgot to tell you all that my dog was again under the cover today, acting very scared and I told my hubby a big one was coming in the next 24 hrs or less.

USGS confirms that tsunami waves have approached 9 feet.

What a shockingly big quake! My thoughts are with all those effected.

foxnews and cnn keep breaking in to report on it. whenever one goes to commercial i go back to the other. now both are talking about it. meanwhile msnbc is busy showing more important things like olympic repeats.

hahaha yes the switzerland vs. norway curling match repeat takes precedence over a 8.8 quake. it is just mind-boggling that they won't cover this.
