This is a very sad news indeed. Those of you who are unaware of Aung San Suu Kyi. In the 1990 general election, Suu Kyi was elected Prime Minister of Myanmar. She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections. She has remained under house arrest in Myanmar for almost 14 out of the past 20 years.

Influenced by both Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence and by more specifically Buddhist concepts, led the fight for democracy against the Military Junta rule. She was offered freedom if she left the country, but she refused.

She was suppossed to be released last year but her house arrest was extended by 18 months after an incident in which uninvited American John Yettaw went to her home and stayed at her lakeside home. Myanmar's ruling military junta accused Suu Kyi of breaching the terms of her house arrest.
