What programs were they running during that time?

Presumably none. A statement from Brookhaven on their website:

LABORATORY CLOSED TODAY, FRIDAY, 2/26 Brookhaven National Laboratory will remain closed today, Friday, February 26, as a major winter storm is expected to continue to impact Long Island. The Laboratory will reopen for normal operations as of 5 p.m. this evening. Non-essential personnel will NOT be allowed to enter the Laboratory site today. Essential personnel are expected to report for their scheduled shifts; if you have a question regarding your status, ask your supervisor.

Is this standard procedure for particle laboratories, to close them down when major storms arrive? Or is this particular one just because it is close to a major population center?
Interesting!

NRC MONITORING UNUSUAL EVENT AT MILLSTONE 2 NUCLEAR PLANT

www.nrc.gov...

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is monitoring an Unusual Event declared this morning at the Millstone 2 nuclear power plant in Waterford, Conn. An Unusual Event is the lowest of four levels of emergency classification used by the NRC.

At 9:38 a.m. today, Millstone 2 lost off-site power for reasons that are still being investigated. (Nuclear power plants, besides sending electricity to the grid, also use a small percentage of their electrical output to power certain operational equipment.) In response, plant owner and operator Dominion declared an Unusual Event at 9:54 a.m. due to a loss of off-site power for greater than 15 min.....more at link

A combination of four Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) detectors—BRAHMS, PHENIX, PHOBOS, and STAR—measured a temperature of about 4 trillion degrees Celsius, or 39 trillion degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature was produced after a carefully controlled explosion occurred inside the 3.9-kilometer (2.4-mile) long Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

...a possibility (but someone said it`s closed today).

The hole you seen on the radar pics is where the National Weather Service New York office, NEXRAD WSR-88 weather doppler is located. Blank hole of radar coverage is called the "Cone of Silence" (not the sound-proof shield on the TV show Get Smart). The radar is limited, close in by its inability to scan directly overhead. Therefore, close to the radar, data is not available due to the radar's maximum tilt elevation of 19.5°. This radar weather anomoly can be see in any storm overhead a NEXRAD WSR-88 doppler radar in the United States.

Radar "cone of silence" confuses my local TV weatherman. He will say the storm "magically disappears & reappears" lol.

There could be a very simple answer. If you have ever seen a radar picture there is always a hole in the Radar RIGHT WHERE THE RADAR STATION IS. Because the radar is usually beamed out at an angle it doesn't pick up weather directly above it. Pretty simple answer.
