Republican National Chairman Michael Steele is spending twice as much as his recent predecessors on private planes and paying more for limousines, catering and flowers – expenses that are infuriating the party's major donors who say Republicans need every penny they can get for the fight to win back Congress.

Most recently, donors grumbled when Steele hired renowned chef Wolfgang Puck's local crew to cater the RNC's Christmas party inside the trendy Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue, and then moved its annual winter meeting from Washington to Hawaii.

For some major GOP donors, both decisions were symbolic of the kind of wasteful spending habits they claim has become endemic to his tenure at the RNC. When Ken Mehlman served as the committee chairman during the critical 2006 midterm elections, the holiday party was held in a headquarters conference room and Chic-fil-A was the caterer.

Is this the vision of conservatism? Is this the vision that the RNC wants to project to the United States?

I see, so it's ok to spend contributions on such lavishness instead of using that money on campaigns. Steel is supposedly the leader of the party that wants the government to spend less. But does this represent the reality of the party?

Unacceptable. I don't donate to any political party but seriously, that does reflect very poorly on his party and the image they are trying to project.

This just goes to prove how out of touch all politicians are with the rest of America. We are suffering through the worst economy since the Great Depression and they are living it up.

Not really. I think you'll find that Michael Steele is fairly unpopular with the GOP rank and file. Like many of representatives of the GOP, he's only a conservative in front of the TV cameras. He's a perfect example of what's wrong with both political parties. He doesn't practice what he preaches.

Exactly! This is not what this country is wanting.

But this is the leader of the GOP. This is the front man for this election, don't you think his actions are looking bad on the party that wants to regain control of congress?

Yes, it certainly reflects poorly upon the GOP, but the problem is that probably half or more of the party representatives are exactly like him. Its going to take a party-wide housecleaning to correct the issue.

The 'do as I say, not as I do' philosophy is rampant among the leadership of both parties, unfortunately.
