AN iceberg the size of Luxembourg knocked loose from the Antarctic continent earlier this month could disrupt the ocean currents driving weather patterns around the globe, researchers said. While the impact would not be felt for decades or longer, a slowdown in the production of colder, dense water could result in less temperate winters in the north Atlantic, they said.

www.news.com.au...

This is a huge iceberg! Could move in and live on it!!!

`The 2550 sq km block broke off on February 12 or 13 ` `The billion-tonne mass was dislodged by another, older iceberg, known as B9B, which split off in 1987.` Wow this is a big ice cube .

Would blowing this massive iceberg up into thousands of pieces help solve the problem?

Would this save the polynyas and keep production of this dense water going or would it just make matters worse?

Sometimes i wonder.

there are no polar bears on the Antarctic continent.

Tow it to Calif and pump the melt water into the desert for farming.

My guess is it would only exacerbate the situation. The size of the explosion needed to take out something that size would do untold amounts of damage to our already frail environment. Plus it being in much smaller fragments would cause it to melt quicker and probably drop the ocean a few degrees.

Yeah, bad idea....

Blowing stuff up usually doesn't solve the issue... unless you own WT7.

I guess it's just one of those things where we'll have to just go with the flow.

Believe you me.
I wish blowing stuff up was the answer to most, if not all, of life's problems.

news.bbc.co.uk...

Dr Neal Young, a glaciologist at the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Research Centre in Tasmania, told the BBC that any disruption to the production of the super cold water - known as bottom water - in the region would affect ocean currents, and consequently weather patterns, for years to come.

Unless TPTB are using this iceberg as a cover story for the fact that we are about to go into an ice age.

What better way to prevent panic... blame it on the big nasty berg... "don’t worry people, it will melt soon and everything will go back to normal"

*note* I don’t really believe that... but... you never know
