Bacteria drive electric mud?

www.the-scientist.com

Underwater mud can conduct electricity, possibly with the help of bacteria in the sediment - a result that helps explain the large amount of electrical activity researchers have detected in ocean sediments, a study published in this week's in Nature reports.

The finding could change how researchers think about microbes' contributions to geochemical processes.

...some bacteria have so-called nanowires, hair-like extensions on the cells' surface that can conduct electricity.

Okay, it's not a LOT of electricity, and the role bacteria play isn't clear. Still, it's most interesting.

Who knows where these discoveries might lead? Out front, researchers think there might be enough power to "fuel a light bulb or more importantly, deep sea monitoring equipment."

De Beer, who researches sediments on the ocean floor, envisions taking advantage of this phenomenon to produce energy in-situ during deep sea dives. The electrical current in sediment may not be enough to fuel something as large as a submersible, he said, but it could fuel a light bulb or more importantly, deep sea monitoring equipment.

...I'm wondering whether or not electricity-producing bacteria might be a factor in maintaining our eco-system.

Who knows?

Wounder what Nikola Tesla would do with this? We have so much potential energy around us we really don't need coal, nuclear or hydro electrical power plants. The problem as one of Nikola Teslas' Beneficiaries JP Morgan stated that with the use of natural wireless energy transmission is he couldn't charge people for the power.

So the Bacteria may be incidental or may have everything to do with it, irregardless, we could harness this electric power using Technology from the late 1800s and solve our energy needs, but unfortunately for the power companies instead of fluctuating rates they would be forced to go to a flat rate.

The Earth is a GIANT (relatively) Electromagnet, but unfortunately most of Nikolas patents were carried away after his death. Imagine electric cars that never need to be recharged or electric planes that could stay up forever if need be.

Instead of drill baby drill it should be harness baby harness. You can see wireless transmission of energy on youtube with people using plug in tesla coils. However the same phenomena can be accomplished using the potential energy in Ionosphere and in the ground. www.youtube.com... this is base on a real experiment.
