WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama launched a vigorous defense of his economic agenda on Wednesday, rejecting critics who call his policies "socialism" and insisting he aims to boost U.S. competitiveness abroad.

Speaking to the Business Roundtable, which groups some of the country's top chief executives, Obama called for support of his administration's efforts to overhaul financial regulation, revamp the health insurance industry and create jobs.

"Contrary to the claims of some of my critics and some of the editorial pages, I am an ardent believer in the free market," Obama said in remarks that were set against a backdrop of unease in the business community about his economic policies and legislative priorities.

Obama is not a socialist, or a communist, he is a corporate oligarch.

What he wants is big business to grow in this country and augment the government. Just read the jobs bill and you will see it mostly benefits large corporations.

Anyone who still thinks Obama is going to make this country a socialist nightmare hasn't really been paying attention. He is going to make this country a corporate nightmare.

Someone else who know the word oligarchy. You are 100% right and I am glad to give you your first flag. Socialism and communism are in reality a oligarchy. This is what they seek on a world level I fear. And with Europe crumbling and America Crumbling we are in for a bumpy ride. But we will in the end see the truth the Europeans wont but we will. And when we do there is going to be a big run on rope.

I always have a problem with the end is nigh stuff. It just doesn't fly with me. But when I read who benefits the most from things like the jobs bill and the health care bill, it does make me wonder why our government would willingly sell us out like this.

They barely try to hide it anymore.

You left Fascism out of the available options.

I know I'm supposed to have more than 1 line, but frankly, I just don't know what to say anymore. I read what Obama said and I couldn't believe he actually expressed those thoughts publicly and was able to maintain a serious expression on his face. Either 90% of the American people are completely ignorant and in some kind of parallel dimension or I am. Maybe it's me, at least I hope it's just me.

Why should they bother?

The people love their authoritarian overlords.

Lately Ive begun to wonder if lining people up and shooting every tenth man would even upset the majority of people. The gov man with his finger on the trigger just has to remind us all on TV that it's for our own good. It'll either protect us from terrorism or cut out healthcare costs.

Sure, something might happen somewhere down the line that gets a bunch of people upset at somebody but the people then react stupidly and just replace that authoritarian with another authoritarian and pretend it's change.

Why should they hide it? It's what got the morons of the US to vote Obama and his party into a majority rule of the govt. I realize any party has it's drawbacks but right now the US has the greater of two evils in office. No matter what happens on the next elections I personally believe things have gone too far to reverse. It will be a long slow death for the US.

I especially find it distasteful how it came about.
The President's priority is govt takeover of the health and enviro sectors. With these two things under control, pretty much every action we take can be regulated.
But whoa!! along came some pesky reality:
--public opposition to the Coppenhagen treaty
--public opposition to the health care bill and the election in Mass
--public outcry for "jobs"/fixing the economy.

So what happened next?
--Admin implementation of the treaty by executive order and EPA regs
--time out to slim the health care bill so there are less details for argument (can implement it all later thru regs) and a recommitment to ram it thru
--TIME OUT FOR A WEEK OF SPEECHES TO THE PUBLIC ABOUT JOBS, INCL THE FALSE HOPE OF NUCLEAR JOBS, AND SPEEDY PASSAGE OF A JOBS BILL THAT CAN BE REFFERED TO AS "THE FIX", BUT REALLY DOES NOTHING FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Nixon - Economy Good
Ford - Economy Fair
Carter - Economy Bad
Reagan - Economy Good
Bush - Economy Fair
Clinton - Economy Bad
Dubya - Economy Fair
Obama - Economy Bad

Is there a Pattern here ? ..........Hmm..........

The real problem of the health care bill isn't the government taking it over, its the government giving it away to the health insurance companies.

Forcing YOU to get health insurance through a company that before would just deny you for some bull [snip] pre existing condition.

Now let's be honest, the republican plan of letting these companies compete with each other nationally isn't any better because these companies actually operate in every single state in the union anyway.

So the Republican plan actually limits state power to regulate their own health care insurance industry by ignoring state rights and letting these corporations consolidate their already enormous power nationally, thus creating monopolies.

No!

It's the government giving control of our personal life and death health care decisions to some of their own faceless and couldn't care less government bureacrats.

Next time you need to get your license or registration renewed. Watch the DMV workers s-l-o-w-l-y go about your business with little or no care as to the effect their actions have on you.

You can intellectually and honestly think government run and controlled health care won't end up the same?

Its the old end around play. He's trying to maintain an impression of a capitalist policy and private control, while in reality building a structure of more government power and control over those industries in the underpinnings. Inevitably, there will be some 'crisis' and he'll pull the rug out from under the private leadership of those corporations...for the public good, of course... and all that will be left is the government control structure that he's been building all along.

This current bill doesn't do that, it gives your health care over to the businesses that before denied you based on a pre existing condition, or found a way to otherwise deny your claim.

The government doesn't have to set up a bureaucracy at all, the health insurance industry already has one in place.

You already expect the company that you pay for insurance to work like mad to make sure you can't get to the doctor you need. Why would the federal government have to do anything extra to provide a service that the insurance companies already have?

Now they are just forcing every American to buy into these companies.

The bureaucracy is already in place in the insurance company you will be forced to buy from, the federal government won't have to lift a finger in order to screw you out of the health care services you require.

Why the hair tearing over presumed rigid dogmatic governmental political doctrines and assumptions?

"Contrary to the claims of some of my critics and some of the editorial pages, I am an ardent believer in the free market," – President Obama.

1. The NWO/Corporations had taken a sever beating in the market place as well as public opinion. They may be much hurt, and down, but are not out yet.

They are still a formidable shadow force, with trillions still in their hidden hoards. The Feds and private investors are holders of US debts. They may not own ever corner of US but they do own substantial US assets.

You don’t screw with your formidable enemies. Your find a common ground and then work from there on compromises. Screw one side and everyone will end up screwed.

2. For the past 200 years, US had been a socialist state in its basic form. It’s creed – ‘for the people, and by the people’ already tells you much.

The only thing that had stopped its outright declaration had been:-

A ) 60s McCarthy anti-communism witch – hunts.

It had been very successful in thumbing down the ideals of Communism, much thanks to despotic and moronic monsters such as Hitler, Stalin and Mao themselves tearing down the foundations of communism, setting up tyrannies instead of following Communistic creed, that it put fear into generations on the presumed evils of any other political doctrine except American Democracy.

Generations of children are brought up believing communism or socialism is evil and associated with the likes of Stalin, KGB, Hitler, Brown shirts, Mao, Red guards as true representatives of such doctrines. Anyone that sought to discuss such politics are branded traitors and evil.

B. ) Corporations

Corporations have the most to fear from the ideals of communism or pure socialism, as it ALL production and facilities will be in the hands of the people/ leaders. They will have no where to go and may even be beheaded, as USSR and China murdered the nobles and the gentry class.

They will fight tooth and nail and more against the doctrines communism and socialism like there’s no tomorrow, for their very lives will be at stake. It aint gonna be easy to give up on the beach front villas and lamborghinis, wines and free easy women.

Already, they had invested funds into the republican machineries, the only ones who are hell bent on stopping the President right or wrongly, partisan politics at its worst.

C. ) Religion

Communism and some form of socialism beliefs are based upon the principles that religion is the opiate of the masses. Once a nation chooses such political doctrines, religious leaders and religion will have to go.

Those who are dependent on it for money and power will fight like the Corporations. Those who are deep in faith will fight such horror rejection of their beliefs.

3. The thing is, such fears are unnecessary in this modern age. Thanks to Stalin and Mao, we the people had seen the shortcomings of Communism and Socialism.

Russians and the Chinese had been the unfortunate guinea pigs. Their sacrifices had not been in vain, for No human alive today and yet to come will EVER swear to such doctrines again.

Thus, the religious, the Corporation and the masses need not fear.

The new evolved political doctrine from this present suffering will be as the forefathers had sworn, a govt based on the creed of ‘for the people, and by the people’.

There will be no labels, but the best of experimented political teachings from our past generations, while rejecting its excesses will be used for the future evolution of mankind in governance.

So don't lose hope yet or your personal power of political change through our sacred votes. Truth will always set you free from your fears.

What does the "public option" mean to you?

The word "public" equals "government" when used in this way. Public option equals government option equals a situation exactly how I described it above (like the DMV).

Pure and simple.

More like medicare medicaid or the VA. (I am not saying that those are better, but those are examples of government run healthcare.) The DMV is a state run licencing agency for motor vehicles, and has nothing to do with health care whatsoever.

So basically you are saying that the states shouldn't run a public option? So let's get this straight, the federal government shouldn't run a government run health care system, and the states shouldn't run a government health care system (Even though Hawaii runs a government health care system and it seems to work just fine)

So am I correct to assume that you are all for people being forced to buy insurance through large national corporations?
