No big secret that Indy cars have taken a back seat to Nascar latly. Since about the mid 90's
when the open wheeled racing league split into the cart and the IRL.
Now the Indy Racing League is beginning to regroup around a new design.
Quite frankly I can see why.
Just look at this car.

The IRL gave design contractors parameters for a new more environmentally friiendly design. This is what they have bought.

I want one.

This new concept is being called the Delta wing. It does away with the front and back spoilers and adds the air plane style tail fin.

This car will be using a 4 cylinder turbo charged engine that will achieve the same amount of 650 horses. It weighs in at less than 1000 pds. with the driver.
Awesome!

Looks like a cross between an F1 car and a rocket

The front wheels don't seem to be wide enough apart to make the car handle well at speed, but a good looking car it is all the same

Just trying to figure out how it would look,after contacting another race vehicle, during the race. Talk about pieces part's flying everywhere, and how much duct tape would it take to hold it together, until the end of the race.......

Props to the IRL for being visionary, but I'll stick with Formula 1. I've honestly tried, but never been successful, to find the enjoyment in watching people drive in an oval.

Majestic good eye. They shortened the front wheel base to 27" and widened
the rear to 72". Why the numerology is anyones guess.

See that's why I mentioned that they were going with a more environmentally friendly design. They are finally moving in that direction.

The narrow fron wheel spacing allows for tight turning. There won't be any problems with handling.

I really don't think this team of engineers would focus there energy on a design that won't perform, much less show it to the public.

under high G's there would be a lot of over steer pushing the front end every where. Nice to look at but not that great to drive, at over 200 MPH that would be interesting.

Actually, I'd imagine that it's completely the opposite to what you say. Not only is the narrow front end going to be unstable in corners, but added to that theres the fact that there's no front wing to speak of equalling not a lot of downforce on the front end and those tiny tyres there's not going to be a hell of a lot of grip...it's going to be terrible doing anything other than a straight line.

I'm a BIG F1 fan, and I'm sorry to say that I'm laughing at this thing as much now as I was when I first saw it a few weeks back.
