Hugo Chavez demands Queen returns Falkland Islands to Argentina

www.telegraph.co.uk
The outspoken Mr Chavez used his weekly television and radio show Alo Presidente to rally Latin America behind the cause of his Argentine counterpart Cristina Kirchner by making a direct appeal to Buckingham Palace.

"Look, England, how long are you going to be in Las Malvinas? Queen of England, I'm talking to you," said Mr Chavez.
"The time for empires are over, haven't you noticed? Return the Malvinas to the Argentine people."

We are no longer in 1982. If conflict breaks out, be sure Argentina will not be alone like it was back then."

I dont think the U.K has anything to worry about even if all of South America allies against the U.K... Ever heard of NATO?

Chavez better watch dont give the America/Brittish Goverment an excuse to declare total war....

And If my Memory Serves me correctly dont the Falklands wish to stay apart of the u.K?

When you say the UK should shut the hell up ... Its not the UK shouting.
Its not about a empire its about them wanting to stay British.

surely chavez, knows this its odd that they are both being so vocal, are they suicidal? or do they theink they can get away with it? what is it they know that is making them come out with these statements?
they stand to lose out in a BIG way if they continue down this path.
chavez could end up swinging from the gallows if he trys anything.and looking like the most impotent leader in south america if he doesnt, not good if he was supposed to be so close to war with colombia a few weeks back.

well yes , err that did look like an anti english rant.
the monarchy, i agree with you, but the people cant help it they are trapped, not all of us are beer swilling lazy football fans. lots are yes but not all of us.
and the empire was a relativley good empire compared to all others, we were the biggest and the fairest, we brought government and law, industry and education. and in the end we gave it it all up.
and do you know what? most countries in the empire joined the commonwealth voluntarily, so if they had such a problem with the empire why do you think they are still associated with it?

Aren't you always ranting against the UK though?

The rest of you post is just garbage, to be honest.

You say the "english" (I hate in when only the english get the blame, their are other nations in the UK too) people should stay home on our crappy island, then what say you about the Spanish people who live in Argentina who, ironically, are claiming the British people on the Falkland Islands are colonisers and they want their island back?

Talk about hypocritical. Colonisers telling colonisers to stop being colonisers! Sod off, Argentina.

The people of the Falklands want to stay British. End of discussion.

We indirectly supported the U.K during the war. We supplied them fueling points, munitions, and intel.

www.timesonline.co.uk...

Regional leaders at the Rio Group summit in Mexico were expected to sign up for a resolution backing Argentina in its escalating row with Britain after Brazil and Chile pledged their support.

it's not 1982 anymore, and south america is no longer ruled by puppet dictatorships (but, democrats -- and in this matters, factoring public opinion and a historical sense of revenge, things could escalate to dire circumstances).

as someone above has said, uk wouldn't risk a war because of the economy, recession et al, but, matter of fact, it's exactly in this situations that going to war is most propitious -- what better way to put all those unemployed to some good use: cannon fodder...
