I haven't been to the range 61 gate in years. They used to have a repeater of sorts there, but it was removed. Anyway, here is a photo of a camera at the gate. Now this area is very remote, so how this camera is powered is a subject of debate. The photos don't show a solar array, so again, my guess is a big ass gel cell. Now I suppose the camera could be there in anticipation of the new power lines going through the area.

range 61 gate

For those that need a memory refresh, the range 61 gate is where Jim Wilson drove after failing to turn right onto Groom Lake Rd, and thus declaring the Groom Lake base had been moved.

Range 61 is a live bombing range. I've watched the targets get hit by a stream of bullets from the AC130. It is quite a display from Tikaboo since they use IR rounds as tracers, so it looks like the building is being hit with a faint red laser beam.

My guess is Wireless Power

focus.ti.com...

Something 'New' to the Electronics Market. But, like I've always said. Anything unveiled to the public, TPTB have had for several years before hand.

We've tossed around the powered by microwaves deal and ultimately rejected the notion. You just can't get enough power that way. Now it is true the Soviets bugged the US Embassy with a device powered by radio, but the technology was a bit different. [It is discussed in the book "Spycraft", which I consider a must read if you are into that kind of stuff. ]

The best we can come up with is the cameras are gel cell powered and turned on remotely. They may also be turned on via seismic detectors.

There are two schools of thought regarding condensation on the lens. Most camera mounts are heated to avoid this, but that would take significant power. Cohu does have camera enclosures that are sealed and designed to be both nitrogen purged and used at positive pressure. The positive pressure keeps the moisture out.

The old Desert Rat newsletters refer to the frequencies used by the cameras to be a bit above 200MHz (I don't recall the exact frequency). However, nobody has ever offered evidence that they intercepted the video from one of these cameras.

Regarding the two antennas, one idea is they microwave the video back to Bald Mountain, while the yagi is for viewing by the dudes. Since I haven't been to Gate 61 in a while, I can't say how the antennas are oriented. However, the set up looks very similar to the current gear at the front gate.

I should say it again that Range 61 is a live bombinb range. Presuming you don't get shot by accident (not a likely scenario), the ranges have unexploded ordnance. You wouldn't want to run into any of that stuff. Even the unburnt flares and chaff packs you find on the public land are dangerous. EOD is best left to experts.

BTW, there is a movie out called "The Hurt Locker" that uses EOD in the theme. I can't vouch for it, but I bet some real EOD experts have stated their opinion on the blogs.

For whatever reason, it must be a guy thing, I think of this everytime I see a picture of one of these remote camera's:

EDITED TO ADD: I, in no way, condone smashing the crap out of government property, no matter how carefully you sneak up on it from behind, or how big a bat you brought...

I did talk to him about that fiasco. My complaint was that the sensors were on public land. He said something to the effect that the government (BLM I think) has put sensors on public land to guard petroglyphs, so it was legit.

I never did ask Chuck if he took the sensor since I know he wouldn't do that. You need a lot of up front money to win your day in court, while the feds have a limitless amount of money to spend trying to put you in jail.

I think I mentioned this before, but it should be pointed out that emids have tamper sensors. It's just a cheap mercury switch on the emids. Just to be perfectly clear here, the sensor would go off normally as it was approached, then the transmitter would signal if tilted. So if Chuck took the transmitter, they would have nailed him on the spot.

Now I suppose you could take a transmitter at night and quickly pull the batteries so it wouldn't be sending a beacon for the feds to find both you and the transmitter. But there is no point to taking a sensor or transmitter since the schematics are easily obtained, not that I will reveal how I got them. That is, there is nothing to discover by possing a sensor or transmitter.

For those that think the cameras are fake, I can say for a fact at one time the camera at the Bald Gate panned to follow us. If you study the angles the south most Bald Mountain gate, it appears to be impossible to watch the immediate border from on top of the mountain, so the remote camera is needed. Now it is possible some of the other cameras are fake.
