Seems a bit over the top to me. But each to their own.

I was raised that the best way to avoid conflict is to try and talk your way out of it (you would be surprised it actually works), if talking fails walk away, and if you cannot walk you run away. It is only after you have exhausted every effort to avoid the situation that you use force. To teach a kid to shoot a gun, before you teach them how to AVOID the types of situations to use a gun is irresponsible and highly destructive. But that is my personal opinion.

I am not sure what to say. Maybe i should come with some pointer on how to teach someone to shoot for the first time.

If some one wants to be safe with a gun. Just having a Gun ain't enough. Not if some one wants to shoot back at you. Or charge you with some other type of weapon. Using the gun properly is the main safety.

Here are some training tips:

1. Learn how to stand properly.

Without body armor. Its important to make sure your body is as small/thin as possible in the direction the threat is at. SHOLDER pointing at the threat.

With body armor: You want the armor pointing in the direction the threat is at.

2. Learn how to hold the gun properly with both hands. Just learn how to hold on to it. Don't try to crush it with both hands.

NB. If you hold on to the gun to hard it will effect you trigger finger from squeezing the trigger properly. And your gun will most likely move from its target. With a short barrel it doesn't take much movement before its of target.

3. Learn how to aim properly. Always bring the gun up to the line of sight. Put your focus on the front sight as soon as it's at your line of sight. Then you line up font sight with the back sight onto the target.

NB. Don't focus on the target. Always focus on your sights. And line them up onto the target.

NB. When you shoot don't take your eye of the front sight. Don't focus on the target. Get your gun ready to shoot again. Focus on getting front sight and back sight lined up on the target for a new round. As you line up the sights pool in the slack on the trigger. So that the next pool will make the gun fire. All guns have a slack on the trigger.

4. Learn how to bring a gun out of its holster properly. To do this correct you place your holster at your hip. Just behind your front pocket.

To pick up the gun from the holster. All you have to do is pool your elbow back until your hand is at your hip over the gun. Then you open your hand so that your fingers are pointing down and your thumb is pointing forward.
Then you bring your elbow forward and your middle finger will guide your hand onto the pistol grip. Your thumb will unlatch the gun holster. You bring the gun up by pooling your elbow back again. NB. don't put your index finger on the trigger until the gun is out of the holster.

NB. Always LOOK at your target while you are reaching for your GUN.

The other hand:

As you are reaching for the gun in the holster. You bring the other hand to the center of your body ( The belly button is a good place to put it). You have the hand open with the fingers pointing down at 45 degrees, and the thumb pointing forward. In this position your hand is ready to grip the gun properly when you bring the gun up.

As soon as the gun leaves the holster. You point the gun straightforward. Put your index finger along the slide ready for action. Bring the gun to the other hand. Don't bring the other hand to the gun.

Now that you are holding the gun with both hands in front of your belly button pointing forward. You are quite ready for action. But your not there yet.

From this position you will asses your target. To shoot you bring the GUN up to your line of sight. As you bring the Gun up you pool in some slack on the trigger. When you see the gun. You shift your focus from the target to your front sight. Then you line the front sight up with the back sight onto the target. Now since you pooled in the slack on the way up. It wont take that much movement of the index finger to fire the gun accurately.

When you shoot always keep your focus on the front sight. Don't stop to see if the target is hit. Focus on lining up your front sight with the back sight onto to the target again. And as you do this pool in the slack on the trigger. You always want to be ready to shoot again if the target requires another round.

In other words: Always get the gun ready for a new round. Then asses the target and see if it needs another round.

When your done shooting bring the gun back the same way it came. And always keep your eye on the target. Dead or alive.

EDIT:

If you want to check your target after your done shooting at it. Bring the gun back to the belly button pointing forward at the target. Index finger on the trigger. You want to rest your arms now.

As you move to the target keep both hands on the gun. You want to approach the target form a blind side. That means the targets line of sight. And you want to do that as quiet as possible. You will first stop at a good arms length from the target. Then observe. If you absolutely want to touch the target. Don't bring your gun any closer to the target. keep it at your belly button pointing at the target. You will keep your gun safe and your body will give it support. Put one foot close to the top of the targets head. Then go down on one knee. The knee furthest from the target. Your gun will automatically point at the targets head from this position.

For target practicing:
It could be a good move to start up close. 5m maybe. And move further away as you get the hang of it.

How to shoot using one hand Combat style.

Focus on a target. Bring your hand up to your line of sight from your hip. Then make a fist. This position is your correct way of holding a hand gun with one hand. It will probably be at a angel of 45 degrees.

Why is that?

Its always important to hold the gun as natural as possible. You always want to hold the gun as natural as possible to prevent adjustments all the time. If you do this and shoot you will notice that your hand brings the gun back to the most natural position. The natural position also prevents you from getting tired as fast.

When you hold the gun at 45 degrees. You will always see the front sight because the gun will recoil to your line of sight. And that will make you save time for lining the front sight up with the back sight. Which is you main priority.

Why not? I learned to shoot when I was 5 and have never had one bit of trouble. I bet I am not the only one. Guns are not evil they are a tool. Should children be able to play with a stick? Could you kill with a stick? I could make 100's of this type of argument but I think your narrow mind will only be fixated on the big evil gun. I actually feel sorry for you.

Yeah, no.

I'd teach my children martial arts first, probably Aikido. If taught by a good instructor it will give children a good chance to deal with situations in a multitude of ways. That could be walking away, to a mild tumble (for the opponent) or in a more serious situation, the skill to disable an attacker.

You don't need a gun for every fight.

Regarding the post about teaching a child of seven to use a firearm, I do not find that to be absurd. Provided you are teaching them properly.

I grew up in a household where my father, a police officer, believed that children should be taught the consequences of a weapon but also the ability for them to be safely used.

He took my brother and I both out at a considerably young age and shot pumpkins. He looked at us and explained that if a person were to mess with firearms and not know their capabilities, that could be what happened to our heads.

Granted, he didn't use anything fancy - but it taught us both a very valuable lesson. And neither my brother or I turned into maniacs. In fact, I prefer talking out of violence - or others out of violence. I do not own a firearm, but have considered it. I am a very peaceful person, but I also have sense.

Firearms (as well as other weapons) exist in this world. To not educate or be educated on them is a mistake for more than one reason.

However, there are other methods of protection for women/men/teens/etc that require preemptive methods. ie. Having your keys out and ready when you are walking to your vehicle, as opposed to digging for them AT your vehicle in a darkened parking lot. Keeping your head raised while walking alone. These small steps in behavior can easily take you from possible victim to safety.

I am for everyone "capable" of owning a weapon, but I am anti anyone being able to have one without having knowledge of how to use, clean, and store one. They should also be mentally sound, but of course that requires further research on the individual - not just basic background check.

That is where it becomes a thin line of privacy. But I would much rather know that we, as a society, are doing what we can to keep weapons out of the hands of people who plan to use them deliberately for criminal behavior - and sometimes, those are people who have never had a blip on their record.

And of course, I realize that opens up a whole can of worms.
