No, I'm sorry to say that I nor my friends, nor relatives are better off now than one or two years ago. One of my neighbors even lost his home.
From the conversations around the Christmas dinner table and church, thing, don't look like they will be getting any better.
ps,
I enjoyed the "cat attack on the village."

And this is exactly the problem...you can base the mood of the entire country off of your families experience. Not even your towns experience...or your state for that matter.

But this is what people do...and people who are having a hard time will have the loudest voices.

I'm doing much better this year than I was last year. But I know that doesn't mean that everything is peachy for everyone in the country. And also since I'm doing fine...I'm not going to be complaining or out at protests. But if asked individually...I would say yes...things are better. And when you poll a lot of individuals from all over the country...you can get a sense of what is going on. One poll means nothing...but a trend in a poll tells a story...and that is what we see from these polls...a trend...not an outlier poll.

So Violater1, I am sorry that you, your family, and your friends are having a hard time. Hopefully your situations will pick up just like the trend of the entire country. But your situation doesn't define the whole country. And just because on ATS the group that is shouting the loudest are the ones that are not happy doesn't make that the truth...it just means they have more to yell about.

Thanks to everyone who responded so far. Star from me!

For myself, I don't know what to think. My husband and I are doing fine....but I have friends and family members who aren't. My brother is in the construction industry and they're really struggling right now.

For everyone facing some tough times ahead, I wish you the best. Hopefully things will improve and you will come out ahead.

Buy real estate NOW.

I hope this is good advice, because we just bought our first home....

The prices in our area for real estate are super low. We did a budget, we are careful with our money, so I don't think it will be a problem. Hopefully it works out....

Don't buy a home to live in. You are better off renting, at least for the first 10 years of your 30-year mortgage.

Buy investment properties and rent them out.

You want to own a house? Buy a two-story and make the second floor into an apartment and live in it. Rent out the ground floor and take depreciation.

Even when the Fox News trash lose their McJobs and their mortgages, they need someplace to rent.

Then when the market swings back up you can cash out.

Our current house can be nicely described as "a fixer-upper." Nicely.

It is or plan to move out, fix some of the problems, then rent it out. The neighborhood this house is in has a lot of rental homes, lot of migrant families who will rent the house and then switch out tenants within their family as they move backa nd forth for work.

We've already had several rental offers.....so I thnk your advice is very sound! Thanks again!

Did they poll government employees or folks in the open market?

I run a sales route in Eastern NC and Southside Va, and the economy stinks, many of my clients are really pushed to the limit, those that are old enough are retiring and getting out, all, not most, but all of our competitors are hurting ... as we are too.

The towns my customers serve and live in are slowly being boarded up. They are surrounded by closed shops and storefronts with brown paper over the windows, by thrift shops, by businesses that just opened 6-9 months ago with "going-out-of-business" signs. Next to them, are churches and holiness temples that set up in an old store front. Those of you close enough, ride through Scotland Neck, Roanoke Rapids, Emporia, Lawrenceville, Henderson, South Boston, South Hill, Littleton, Rocky Mount, on it goes.

The other wholesalers I run into that border our sales area from surrounding regions all say the same thing. When I ride down a major blvd thick with restuarants and fast food outlets on Friday at noon, and the parking lots that were full just 2 years ago are now only half full, you can see whats happening. Banners everywhere offering discount meals and daily specials.... really good buys...and noone is there.....economics 101, we've got a problem.

And yes, you can listen to the local news...state has budget deficits, tax revenues are down, the DOT in NC and VA are closing maintenaince yards, and laying off workers. Plants in towns that I sell in are closing down, and in a rural area..that can literally shut down the entire town or even the county.

No, by any estimation...things are not getting better. And God help us when inflation starts to creep in( which it is starting to do in Jan'10), and gas starts going up because of some crazy man in the mid-east. Also, most folks are not fooled by the stimulus money...many state and county workers realize when it starts running out this spring, they too will lose their job.

God Save America

AlreadyGone,

Thanks for posting.

Since its the Gallup poll, I would assume they are polling "random" population...but I don't know that for sure.

I agree, things seem to be either holding steady or starting to go back downhill. I hope the trend will reverse soon and things will get better, but a lot of people I know are in desparate straits or facing the possibility of job loss.

Wishing you and your customers well!

Please share your own feelings, thoughts, and concerns about your "well-being" currently compared to where you were last year.

**IF** you wish to know if what you are reading is true... say, "Is the US federal government just a bunch of crooks who sold out to the rich" or is that Gallup poll correct... try this... walk outside wherever you live and walk up to the nearest neighbor you see outside in their yard... across the back fence works great....

You will be surprised...

I was in line at the DMV and a gal was processing my vanity plate, and I asked "Is the US federal government just a bunch of crooks who sold out to the rich"" out of the blue, and she stopped what she was doing, looked me dead in the eye and without blinking or thinking said "yes"

TURN OFF THE TV...it is a hypnosis box that breeds overweight, so nothings, who fall asleep in their own drool with their fingertips orange from Cheetos* - so the Gallup "Poll" based on TV viewers is likely a correct assessment of how well TPTB hypnotic mind control regimin is controlling their slaves...

Now if you want to get totally creeped out, read this post and give it a flag so others might see it.

This is a great point.

Just Friday I was listening to the radio, a typical morning DJ show (I"m not a fan of the television, myself). Anyway, they were taking phone calls from callers asking what news source they relied on, and why.

To be my absolutely astonishment and growing hope, caller after caller called in and replied "They're all liars. I don't trust anything they say." Several other callers went on to attack the personal government, claiming they were pulling the strings of the MSM.

I was shocked. This radio show is NOT a political show, just one of those comedy shows you listen to on the way to work. To grossly generalize, I would gues that most of their listeners could be described as "good ole' boys and girls'"....not political enthusiasts by any means. But these average citizens were quite aware that the MSM was biased, had an agenda, and was untrustworthy.

I tell you, that made my day!
