Campaign To Pull Glenn Beck Off The Air Gains Momentum, Here And Abroad

Beck's Fox News show advertisers are dropping like flies. Will the ad exodus take him off-air, or will Fox continue to foot the bill for its propaganda goals?

The movement to pressure Fox News into assessing the financial viability of Glenn Beck's controversial talk show is gaining steam -- particularly overseas.

In the United Kingdom, as of Tuesday, Beck's show had run without a single paid advertisement for six days in a row.

Beck, whose popularity and infamy have grown due to his propensity to cry -- literally and figuratively -- for the state of America as he sees it, is the target of a couple of campaigns aimed at connecting the dots for advertisers who pay top dollar (and pounds) for commercials that run during his hourly TV show, which airs every weekday.

According to StopBeck.com, which organized the U.K. campaign, the number of dropped sponsors for the Glenn Beck show is now up to 116. ColorofChange.org, a Web-based grassroots civil rights group, says domestic dropped sponsors total 97, though the number is certainly "well over 100" when adding on the dropped British sponsors.

The third most listened to show in America. On of the most popular shows on FOX. I don't see him going anywhere, whether you like him or hate him.

Fox is primarily a business based on corporate sponsorship.
The conservative bent is nothing more than window dressing, targeted demographics to sell
depends, denture adhesive and viagra to angry old white men.
When sponsorship for any particular talking head declines or bails, that talking head is looking for employment elsewhere.

Plenty of sponsors have bailed on Beck and haven't been replaced.

It's not about viewers, it's about sponsors. Mkt. share isn't just about ratings.

The only way to get people like Beck, Hannity, Olberman, and anyone else you disagree with is to make a stronger arguement than them and get airtime to vent it...
Ratings fuel airtime, and if ratings dwindle, then so does airtime.

There is no such thing as bad press (ask Howard Stern). The more people bark about how crappy someone is, the more interested people are to tune in to see what the whole gripe is about...frankly, I would not be suprised if the "get him off the air" crowd is actually his handlers causing controversy.

So, dont believe what you read, believe your logic behind why things happen moreso...if I find someone is a idiot, the last thing I am going to do is make a massive stink about how nobody should listen to him...I will simply ignore them.

Look, I hate Glen Beck as much as the next progressive liberal, but I mean come on really?

The man has a right to say whatever he wants, and if Americans are dumb enough to just listen and not do their own research the the blame is on them.

He's simple doing what he's been taught. Take advantage of the idiots.

He's not going anywhere, Fox will NEVER cancel a show due to a "grass roots" movement in the United States, much less one in the UK.

Americans LOVE controversy, they love to hear somebody say the things that they are too afraid to say or aren't smart enough to come up with.

And the big kicker? They prefer when it's a total fabrication.

The truth is just boring to the average American.

You say Americans love controversy, especially when it is total fabrication, but you fail to mention that Beck did a series on the rise of the socialist/progressive/liberal party in America, that he was actually teaching viewers things that are not taught in school.
Things like Teddy Roosevelt being a progressive who wanted universal healthcare and to redistribute wealth, that Woodrow Wilson, a one time professor at Princeton was a vehement racist, as well as being a proponent of eugenics, that FDR, because he tried to manipulate the economy, attempted to take over businesses, and raised taxes to some of the hightest levels in the history of the country, caused a recession in the middle of the great depression. FDR got us involved with the lend lease program with the Allies so they could rebuild our economy by building ships, tanks, planes and other weapons of mass destruction. This, of course, led to our direct involvement with the war, and the deaths of some of the best and the brightest. (I'm not excusing Bush. That's a topic for another thread.)
These are just a few of the things Beck covered. A great many of these things I wasn't taught in grade school, junior high, high school or college. But I went out and found biographies and validated what Beck covered. And guess what? The biographies were sympathetic to their subjects.
I will refer you to a couple that come to mind at this instant. "FSR; A Traitor To His Class." and "Theodore Roosevelt, American Lion."
I don't recall the authors, but you can google the titles and find them, if your interested in finding taking a good look at where some of you ideas come from. (By the way, these books were chosen at random. Beck didn't recomend them.)

I don't too much like Liberal talk radio but id fight for their right to be heard just like I would for conservative talk and just like I would any other schmo.

If you start pulling hosts off the air and TV because you don't agree with what they say then you can wave goodbye to our precious right to free speech. Once you do that it wont be worth the parchment its written on.

If his show goes belly up then thats another story. So be it! Somehow I find it hard to believe that will happen because he is more popular than the left would like you to believe. Bottom line.. Glen is not going anywhere, get over it.

Well, we've certainly come a long way (or regressed an equally long way) from the days when common sense told people "If you don't like it, use the 'off' button on your radio or TV." Now if you don't like what you're hearing, then nobody should be able to enjoy it!

I don't suppose that in this digital age, FOX is going to lose much sleep over having to replace their European Glenn Beck hour with someone else. I also don't see a time ever getting here when corporate America is going to abandon the 3rd most watched program on the #1 cable news network in America over a whiney minority of dissenters. Look at the list of his current sponsors...

I'm not sure what percentage of TWS' subscription base would identify themselves as "liberal leaning", but I'd think it a safe guess to say the percentage is negligible at best. Furthermore, it's owned by the same man who pays Beck's sallary... so no way in hell he's going to stop advertising to the very people he's hoping to subscribe to.

Again... the base of interest for this advertiser would logically seem to be exactly who Beck attracts as a viewer base. Is a boycott threat froma group who has a snowball's chance in hell of ever supporting your endeavors in the first place really much of a threat?

Seems like those commercials (the originals, not the jocular remixes) are directed towards seasoned citizens. Ever been to an old folk's home or even visited an elderly firend or relative? Ever noticed how FOX News is pretty much the only thing ever on their TVs? I have no idea why this is, but it sure seems to be a trend. My wife helped care for an elderly woman who was as far left as could be imaginable (she was APALLED when I told her I'd just voted for Bush), yet FOX News was absolutely the only TV network she cared to watch... and, you guessed it, she also had diabetes (and possibly a thing for Wilfred, but that's purely conjecture on my part.) TARGET AUDIENCE. The elderly are too old to be bothered with nonsense like advertiser boycotts... and the corporations recognize this fact.

The rest of the list seems to be industrial corporations (which by their nature would seem to already be divergent from the causes of most of Beck's detractors) and gold buyers/sellers/investors (which Beck has always advocated and his listener/viewer base are strong supporters of.

Let me preface this by saying that i rarely watch Beck. 3 times in my life, i think. His mannerisms are so annoying that i cannot really do it.

regardless, when i have watched him, i have found that if you look past the histrionics, the message is pretty obvious and logical. Sure, there are those "gotcha" sound bites that can be found for anyone.

I CAN say that his show pretty much outperforms the entire CNN lineup, and MSNBC is the national laughingstock (judging by ratings). So, it isn't "The People" that are "waking up". "The People" seem to love him, and love his message. This means that if anyone is going after Beck, it would be "them" (whoever they are).

So, given this, i have to ask myself and all of you a relatively simple question: why would "they" want him shut down? I am a constitutionalist. I want the nation run the way the nation was designed to run. I don't particularly care for either party. But the GOP accusation against the "liberal movement" has been that during any debate, in lieu of providing substantive argument, they tend to instead resort to ad hominem and a tactical "shouting down" of those that disagree with them (you can find examples on every political talk show, which i turn off when the shouting starts).

Of course, the argument can be made that the GOP does this too...but it rarely is. And this example shows a conspiratorial "shouting down" of a very powerful enemy of liberalism or the DNC movement.

So ask yourself, honestly, why would someone want to shut down Beck? In a nation of free speech, why would we feel the need to deny him the right? Fox is making money off of him, and his viewers seem to love him. What are "they" trying to hide/prevent?
