Seoul, South Korea – North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-il turned 68 years old Tuesday in the glow of unstinting praise from his ruling inner circle – and doubts about the stability of his regime and the country’s deteriorating economy. Mr. Kim, however, did not attend a birthday bash at which top officials from the armed forces, the Workers’ Party, and the government pledged allegiance to him. While recovering from a stroke, he appears to be focused on grooming his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, for power by taking him on visits to factories and military units.

We need to start watching North Korea more. Soon Kim Jong Il will pass away and a his son will become the leader. What do you guys think of this? Will his son turn the Country make North Korea any better or will North Korea be destroyed under his power?

Interesting I don't foresee any democratic reforms taking place once the Dear Leader passes away . China and the US seem to give just enough aid to keep the North Korean regime in power . The last ten years has been a lost decade in terms of getting rid of the North Korean regime a complete economic blockade would have done the trick nicely . Currently the North Korean military is well feed if it was to go hungry like the rest of the population then the regime would fall .

You're right. North Korea is being propped up by China and Russia. Let's just give time and see how his son works as leader. Remember Kim Jong Il is a very intelligent when it comes to domestic and foreign politics.

The only other option at this point would be military action . The US can't put any political pressure on China due to its fiscal situation .

I wouldn't say that at all his only goal is to control the North Korean population at all costs .
