Pine Gap protests

I remember when i was a kid i would watch on the news almost every night about people going to Pine Gap and protesting and sometimes even breaking through the gates to see who could get the furthest......My sience teacher at high school even brought one of his mates who went there to give us a talk about it.

All of a sudden it just all stopped and there were no more protests. I want to know if anyone knows why.

The protests had zero effect, they were not supported by the vast majority of Australians and the protestors moved to the next project their masters told them to.
