After nine years of searching, detectors buried 2,000ft underground in an old US iron mine registered two "hits" by what could turn out to be dark matter particles.

Both bear the hallmarks of "weakly interacting massive particles" or "Wimps", one of the most likely dark matter candidates. The scientists say five detections would be sufficient to confirm the presence of Wimps.

Dark matter is now estimated to make up as much as 23 per cent of the cosmos. It is believed to play a central role in the evolution of galaxies and large scale structure of the universe.

This is great news. Hopefully someday we can find a way to use dark matter as fuel so we can stop relying on fossil fuel.

This is very interesting. At 1st glance I find the entire theory of Dark Energy/Matter to be a bit of a stretch. Something akin to the concept of Potential Energy, ie just made up to balance equations. Still, anything that can shed light on what might really be going on has got to be good news. Hopefully the new improved experiment will be more conclusive.
Tell you what tho, "MACHOs"... There was an acronym waiting for the words to make it, eh? What next? Massive Energy Transmitting Round Objects?
