We pay road tax annually. We don't pay per mile at all.

How do you think they figure your road tax? So yes, whether you know it or not, you do pay by the mile. What tollroads are going to do in the UK is be able to have a continuous tax on people, and put into place checkpoints, which is what the bigger picture is anyways.

That's what happens when myopic morons are elected into positions or power and public trust. They abuse their power, ignore the public's interests, breach the public's trust, and raid the treasury which, in this case, consists of selling out the public's most vital commodity to private interests, foreign interests at that, and burden the public's right to travel freely within our own country for the sake of lining the coffers of rich robber barons with the sweat of our children's future labor for generations to come. WHat does Yahweh say about that in the Old Testament: "I will visit the iniquities of the father's upon the children even unto the 3rd and 4th generation of them that hate me." Looks like that curse is coming true here.

I'm ready to find a rusty old pitch fork and begin sharpening the tines for when the sleeping masses wake up, march to their overlords' castles, break down the doors, and drag them into the streets to answer for their crimes.

Hi, My name is soundguy. Long time lurker, first time poster/new member. Hopefully I have found a place to fit in. I am too far right for those on the left. I am too far left for those on the right, and my thinking ends up being too unconventional for the middle. I am looking forward to being part of this community and a contributor.

Reading this thread inspired me to add a different perspective that I hadn't seen represented. Having lurked here long enough, I also realize that that all things are relative and one can always argue as to what came first, the need or the solution that needed sold.

I think one argument that is fomenting here in the U.S. is how to replace the revenue lost as more people switch to hybrids and plug in electrics. As more of those types of vehicles hit the roads (as they will soon) there will be a loss of money collected through the gasoline tax.

But to think that a corporation could be given dominion over that which was acquired through imminent domain reeks to high heaven.

I think you are missing a point or two here.

See the flag on my avatar on the left? You know what country that represents I'm sure.

Now I don't know where you are from, but it sounds like you aren't from the UK - both myself and Essan are.

There has not been "thousands of miles of fibre optic cable" laid at the side of motorways and main roads here for the express purpose of road charging - fFrankly, the government can't fund the transport sector properly and the road network is falling apart. They can't even police stolen number plates and uninsured drivers properly, let alone try and charge vehicles per mile.

There is a single toll motorway in the UK, that is 27 miles long. You pay on entry to it and are not charged by the mile.

I would second that our councils run road maintenance and repair and at the moment they resemble the main roads in Kandahar. I live in Edinburgh and just doing phase one of the tram install has caused a year and half of delays, laying this supposed fibre optic cable would take the councils about a hundred years

Your are spot on, this is a disgrace and again they are trying to find a way to hold onto power over us as it is slipping, what better way to monitor our every move, no wonder they are trying to push the new government schemes to buy cheaper cars with TRACKING EQUIPMENT BUILT IN!

Widespread in England? I live in England and there is 1 toll road in the whole country which is optional you can go round if you want and not pay! (its charged on entry and that is all)

I think this post proves beyond any reasonable doubt that U.S. Citizens really do not own anything within the United States.

If you have the right to travel then why would you have to pay a toll for it? If you have the right to travel then why do you have to ask the State for permission to do so? Isn't a driver's license a permit? If a driver's license is a permit, why are you asking for permission to exercise a right?

Is it because U.S. Citizens have no "rights" only privileges?

jurisdiction, n.1. A government's general power to exercise authority over all persons and things within its territory.

That is very odd, on one hand the Declaration of Independence States that our rights were given to us by our Creator...the highest authority. Somehow we seem to have fallen under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government who grants us those "privileges" that our Creator gave us.

Odd, and I suppose that, what the Federal Government granteth they can taketh away...

It appears that all of the well behaved U.S. Citizens here are doing well playing their game. How many of you check the box?

Oh they already did that to a lot of things in our Country...
For example they made a big network infrastructure controlling almost everything, on the cost of the Dutch people, but also owned by us..
Than they privatize the network for profit and "competition", while they are almost an unbeatable market leader from the start... But the point is the whole thing was already paid by the people who are gonna use it in the first place, just like you and your parents etc. paid for all the Roads in your country... I understand the need money for maintainance, but this is just utterly sick...

And about the Carbontax stuff they say, well it's good it's only affecting those who are driving often... It such a small perspective most people have.. the (kept) blindness of the mainstream - it's almost like most people just wanna be controlled - and everybody is got to take the piss...

1. Toll roads/pay-per-mile is a really bad idea & it's going to *snip* off so many people if they even come close to trying it.
2. Confiscating the wealth of the world's top 5% and then executing them is a far more agreeable idea (Ahabstar: utter genius)

That's a very good and pliable synopsis, and we gotta remember that opec and the politicians who are heavily invested in the oil markets also! BUt the much larger picture here I and a lot of others feel is the "control" factor the elite are exhibiting! Total control in exchange for lost revenue? They might think that is a fair trade if they can gain total control of the populous.

Your flag has nothing to do with the formula that was used to "set" the price you pay for driving on that 27 miles of road! What computes this is the number of drivers per day, number of axles your vehicle has, and the weight of your vehicle and what you are hauling if you are a truck-driver hauling goods.

It seems that you are the one who missed the point here. Toll road prices are set to the above formula, both here in the usa and abroad. Actually, according to our dot here in neighboring west virginia, they copy "Britain's" toll road policy formula! This same formula is how they will be figuring the toll tax for virginia when they get the toll roads ready.
