The pineal gland is situated between the right and left hemispheres of the brain and has long thought to have been a vestigial remnant of a once larger section of the brain. The common perception is that the pineal gland is an evoloutionary left over, the aim of this thread is to discuss the facts, to speculate on the possibilities and to dispell the false ideas.

The Facts -

The pineal gland is directly connected to the nervous system

All light stimulus that is collected by the eyes passes through the pineal gland

In animals the pineal gland plays a major role in sexual development, metabolism, hibernation patterns and seasonal breeding (instinctual intelligence)

The pineal gland is to be found in the oldest part of the brain

The pineal gland is part of the major endocrine gland system, interestingly all the major endocrine glands coincide with the positions that the chakras are said to exist within the body.

It is essential to the functioning of the biological clock

A hormone called Melatonin is created within the pineal gland and it only synthesized when no light passes through the retina, through the optical nerve and into the pineal gland
(I will talk more about Melatonin later!)

It has long since been thought that the pineal gland is the seat of the soul.

Metaphysics, philosophy and the pineal gland -

From the time of Dionysius to the time of Plato, the cultures of the Mediterranean consented to the doctrine that claimed the existence of an order of ultimate reality which lies beyond apparent reality. This "paranormal" reality was accessible to the consciousness only when the "normal" routines of mental data processing were dislocated. It was Plato's pupil Aristotle who changed his teacher's game, separating physics from metaphysics. The philosophical temper of our present civilization, being scientifically and technically oriented, is basically Aristotelian.

Metaphysicians throughout the ages have called the pineal gland the third eye and the seat of the soul, it is said that all the vital psychic energies are channelled from the other chakras and up to the pineal gland. Believe it or not the pineal gland isn't actually considered as part of the brain as it resides outside of the blood-brain barrier and is surrounded by a fetal tissue associated with that of the mouth.
The pineal gland converts the amino acid, tryptophan into serotonin and in turn that is converted into melatonin, it is then released into the bloodstream and cerebrospinal fluid where it is transported around the rest of the body.

Melatonin is essential for our sleep-wake cycle and peaks in the middle of the night when we are in our deepest stages of REM sleep.

The pineal gland is also sensitive to electromagnetic energy and I think a huge change in the earths natural electromagnetic feild could either have the effect of awakening the gland and it's higher functions or have the opposite effect and close it down altogether. Researchers have actually found magnetite clusters near the pineal gland, like homing pigeons, humans have residual ability to orient to geomagnetic directional cues, an ability lost with pineal dysfunction.

Another thing that can have a detrimental effect on the pineal gland is calcification and guess what is in our drinking water, flouride! Which further calcifies the gland.

What has been described here shows that the pineal gland is very energy sensitive! Throughout the ages, it has been assigned a spiritual role that transcends its hormonal function. In Hindu traditions it’s associated with the extrasensory third eye of which perception of the world is not limited to the physical senses. For example, the God Shiva is portrayed with a third eye in the forehead. The pineal gland is linked with the crown chakra called the Thousand Petaled Lotus, which transforms and downloads energy from the ethers into our consciousness.

Continued...

French philosopher René Descartes (1596-1650) emphasized the pineal gland in his writings, calling it the seat of the soul and “The part of the body in which the soul directly exercises its functions.”

Helena Blavatsky, the co-founder of the theosophical movement described the role of the gland in an evolutionary context in her book, the secret doctrine in 1888;
“the third eye acted no longer,” … because man had sunk too deep in the mire of matter.”
· “The third eye …gradually petrified soon disappeared …the eye was drawn deep into the head and is now buried under the hair...”
· “…owing to the gradual disappearance of spirituality and increase in materiality…, it became an atrophied organ.”
· "The third eye is dead…but it has left behind a witness to its existence…the pineal gland.”

Interestingly, there is a correlation between the soul’s emergence in various spiritual traditions and pineal formation. Specifically, the gland first appears in the fetus 49 days after conception. This is the time Tibetan Buddhists believe it takes after death for the soul to finish its sojourn and reincarnate into the next body. This period also approximates the 40 days espoused by early Christians, such as St. Augustine, that it takes for the soul to enter the fetus.

Similarities between Melatonin and DMT -

DMT is structurally similar to melatonin. The biochemical precursor to both molecules is serotonin, a key neurotransmitter whose pathways are involved in mood and targeted in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. DMT also structurally resemblances other psychedelic drugs, such as LSD and psilocybin, and is the active agent in ayahuasca brew Amazon shamans use to provoke out-of-body experiences. Like many mood-controlling pharmaceuticals (e.g., Prozac), these psychedelics act through interacting with serotonin-associated pathways. Now you have to ask yourself is it the production of these hormones that create such mystical experiences or is it that they are created as a result of these experiences, or is it a mix of both? A kind of snowballing effect? Under normal conditions, enzymes will quickly degrade DMT. While we do not know when or under what circumstances DMT rises naturally, it is tempting to hypothesize that when it becomes elevated for some reason, extraordinary experiences may occur. For example, in the case of dying, Strassman speculates that the physiology that keeps DMT levels in check (e.g., degradative enzymes) during life start to break down, allowing full DMT expression, and, in turn, the out-of-body perceptions reported in near-death experiences.

Melatonin and DMT seem hard to discuss mainly due to the nature and political beliefs.

I just wanted to point out that it seems possible to control the production of melatonin in a conscious manner. I'm not sure exactly what the body needs in order to produce a flow out of the pineal gland, yet certain oils tend to help.

Thanks for the post, this may be what I have been looking for or rather the change in direction that I have been asking about, consciously to myself.

If you havent already watch "DMT, the sprit molecule" and read the book, i have a copy if you have'nt read it yet.

Im in the process of reactivating my chakras and some of my revalations are becoming quite hard to deal with, if there is anyone who can help me in a metaphysical manner, im losing the 3rd dimension.. I dont mind, but i keep getting a 'fright'

I'm watching some YouTube videos about the spirit molecule now, thanks for the link.

Much of my path as of lately has been very troublesome for me, I feel as I understand what you mean by "Keep getting a fright", and I feel as though I am drifting away from my "normal" life, as it were. Things have been making less sense to me and I am beginning to get the feeling that I do not belong. It is not as though I feel like I'm losing it mentally but rather that I can see the fallacy in everyday life. The things that people do and say do not make any sense to me as I see nothing but futile endeavors on the part of others.

As far as the revelations felt from opening up one's Chakras (or their alignment) and being hard to deal with I understand this very well. There have been times that these feelings have stopped me in my tracks with a feeling of despair, where do I go from here? At this point the only thing that has worked for me is to let the experience happen and wait till you get through it, time heals all wounds. As with everything "this too shall pass" and the best thing we can do is grow from any experience either good or bad.

I agree with the description of Robert Gable, PHD (Psychologist) in part one @ the 8 Min mark of this video.

I am also a coward when it comes to doing some of this stuff but I also know that I must face my fear. About the only advice I could give is to keep that in mind, face your fear, and be careful what you wish for because thought does create reality and many time we don't know what we are really asking for.

What if the pineal gland responsible for the release of endorphins are the bodies way of guiding us in our quest for spirituality, enlightenment and knowledge?

Endorphins are released naturally through various activities including sex, reaching goals, sports etc and artificially using for example recreational drugs.. What I am proposing is that endophins are actually the way forward in our quest of not only better understanding the unknown but toward evolution. When I experience a rush of endorphins it seems to open up an alternate reality that 'feels damn good', this alternate reality seems to connect to more information and energies and the better I understand it the more endorphins are released. It's as though the body is rewarding the mind for it's progress. For me the be all and end all in life is about feeling good and if we have a gland that recognises this (the pineal gland) and rewards us for not only reaching goals but allowing our conscious minds to shift from their usual mundane seat with the aid of drugs, meditation, sports etc then surely this is telling us something!

Could it be possible that this pea sized gland is actually steering our destiny in all humans by rewarding us when we 'do the right thing'?

Maybe the answer has been with us all along whereby the right thing to do induces the release of endorphins and steers us in the right direction, a direction which only our body and sub-conscious mind are privy to.

IOW the guidance system is already in place (the pineal gland), we just need to embrace and understand it!

The correct environment when meditating, like I said in my post... melatonin levels increase if there is NO light entering the eyes and more importantly they peak when you are in the deepest stages of REM. If your lucid dreaming on a regular basis, which I assume most of us are, then our minds are active and awake even if our bodies are not.
The best advice I can give is to program your mind to do these things, consciously every night before you go to sleep and also when meditating and the rest will work itself out.

Yes I must agree with you! I think your partially correct, it is a reward system yes, but also the pineal gland, aswell as the rest of the endochrine system that is allowing the energies to enter us at the same time. I think it acts as a receiver and a transmitter, snowballing the more you use it.

Yeah I've noticed that, I am a regular lucid dreamer myself and yes it does indeed knock your sleeping patterns out of whack. The way I see it, it's a matter of your spirit/soul dictating when it needs to do it's chores, rather than the body saying it needs to wake up and sleep.

I became apart of the fabric and had to weave.. though retaining my memories of now. wasnt comfortable to have no apparnt escape

Worst thing about an attempt to explain is when there are no words to describe idea of what to do or expect.

I use trance music that has no techno. Any trance station works, yet I prefer live DJs. You can check out my youtube account in my trance playlists:
here. Soulful house also works. There work better and are more dynamic then binaural beats, which sounds too techno too me.

First time use through a mirror is gonna bore you for about an hour just to stare at yourself and find the right light position. Eventually you can expect to suddenly jump between mind-states. Once you got the hang of that feel then you should be more conscious of the 'muscle like' feel to make it consciously happen.

When you stare at the mirror, try to get the light in a position where you see a dot like reflection inside your iris, yet keep it minimal. The light helps you keep focus while in a stare. Try not to stare directly at the dot-reflection. You want to allow your iris to open fully and relax. You'll know when you achieved this when you don't notice the color of your iris anymore. I'd imagine this exercise is harder for those with darker tones in their outer iris.

Your can cross you eyes, stare at one, or stare at both, yet stay focused within your iris. Try different position of the mirror, on your side, below you, above you, etc. Whatever helps relax your eyesight the most and to stay focus (remember the dot-reflection to help center).

See how far you get with just this intro exercise. If you get beyond this, you'll probably sense the melatonin flow.
