'Club class' traffickers jailed
Five people-smugglers who made a fortune by offering immigrants a "club class" service to the UK have been jailed for up to five years.
The gang charged some 400 Indian citizens £8,000 each to smuggle them into the UK over a two-year period.
The fare, twice that charged by other smugglers, included food and water and a comfortable door-to-door service.
Alleged ringleader Shakean Chahal and four other men admitted conspiracy to facilitate illegal immigration.
Chahal, 29, received five years, and brothers Talbinder and Kalbinder Gill, 29 and 30, four and five years respectively. Driver Lee Ludbrook, 43, got
five years, with accomplice Paul Slater-Mason, 38, being sentenced to 12 months.
Chahal, believed to be the head of the Midlands-based gang, drove a Ferrari and had accumulated over £200,000 in assets.
A joint British and French police operation codenamed Gular led to the arrest of most gang members in June 2003 after police stopped people carriers
containing 14 immigrants near Canterbury.
