I suffered my entire life from heartburn(even as a little kid), eventually in my late teens I started cutting out anything that caused me problems. A few months ago I was doing some research and found that every thing that caused me digestive problems contained MSG. Recently I haven't been able to eat anything over a dollar because of money problems (I'm leaching the bandwidth for this post). To no surprise every thing I can a ford contains MSG, and I have heartburn none stop. I'm not looking to make a big post, I just want to suggest to any one with digestion problems to try cutting out MSG for a month.

When you say heartburn, you do mean acid indigestion right?

Have you tried taking a base for this? What I mean is, an antacid.

A few popular brands to try possibly are listed here.

"Alka-Seltzer – NaHCO3 and/or KHCO3
Equate – Al(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2
Gaviscon – Al(OH)3
Maalox (liquid) – Al(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2
Maalox (tablet) – CaCO3
Milk of Magnesia – Mg(OH)2
Pepto-Bismol – C7H5BiO4
Pepto-Bismol Children’s – CaCO3
Rolaids – CaCO3 and Mg(OH)2
Tums – CaCO3
Mylanta"

Reminds me of a time I went to an upscale Mexican restaurant, probably considered an oxy-moron by some folks.
I had an order of chicken mole (pronounced Mo-leh, or moe-lay if yer from the South).
Well later that night I honestly thought I was having a heart attack.
Scared the living mole out of me!

Come to find later, that stuff was packed with massive amounts of MSG, so I agree with the premise of this thread.

Whew, never again.

Thanks for letting me know what a base is. If you don't have issues with MSG then you should bug off. I'm not talking to people who are looking for a bandaid.

I can tell you about msg myself.

I was eating chile/limon flavored corn nuts and beef jerky like crazy for snacks. Low fat. Good, yeah? Nope.

I started getting these "dizzy" spells. Not too bad but weird. I would eat at a local mexican food joint and the next day or so it got really bad.

On the worst day, I woke up and the room was spinning! WAY BAD VERTIGO! I went to the E.N.T. specialist. He tested me for Meniers Disease. Long story short, its brought on by sodium. I have never used much salt and dont care for salty food.

MSG is a trigger.

I stopped the msg (i'm still paranoid about what i eat. small amounts are ok) and watched where i ate. No problems since.

MSG is a cumulative poison. Some are more allergic to it than others.

I understand completely.

Have you considered spending a little more and making dinner for multiple days? Sometimes that can save money. Even mac and cheese and some corn can be had at a reasonable price.

Hope it gets better. One more thing. Are you able to garden?

Funny thing is i eat spicy acidic foods all the time with no problem, I down 24oz of coke with some spicy pasta, no problem at all. The worst thing for me is possessed chicken, it destroys my stomach. Mexican and Asian food is the worse. For along time I though I was allergic to beans and rice. I'm not, I just cant tolerate the massive amount of MSG that they put in these side dishes.

Upscale Mexican? I live in Texas! We have some stupid good places here!Believe it or not, upscale mexican is "gringo wannabe". Tex Mex can be as good as the real deal. Real, authentic mexican is amazing in its complexity and simplicity. A bit of a paradox!
A chile relleno is a simple thing but done right, amazing experience! Pablano pepper with oaxaca cheese dipped in egg batter and fried? Oh god! Chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce. Mole is something I'm particular about. I like it really thick! Carnitas. Lingua.

Hand made tamales.

A simple flour tortilla by hand.

Fresh tortilla chips and a good, fresh salsa with a ton of cillantro.

Sopapilla's with cinnamon and honey.

Thankfully, most good family run places dont touch MSG. The ones that do have no idea how to cook. Any mexican that uses that crap aint much of a mexican!

Man. I really would like a relleno now.

if your in dallas, marsh and forest off of I635. Casa Navarro. Small but nice. Wicked food and excellent service.

yeah. i tried a new mexican place in town. I had chicken enchiladas (thats how i test the place if its tex mex).

It was pink, canned chicken! i almost lost my mind! Tons of salt and god knows what.

your right about asian. they are the worst offenders. Down here they usually say if they have msg. Maybe a law?

It sucks that chicken costs as much a beef nearly! I've got a ton of recipe's. I'm not much good to ya for a dollar a day though. $3-4 and i can help.

you can jazz up mac and cheese with some dill weed and garlic though!

MSG is basically poison, don't eat it. The cost factor on foods is silly. Don't eat pre-packaged stuff. Eat real food, no MSG. Eating real foods is cheaper than pre-package anyway especially if you lean towards locally grown things and go places like farmers markets.
Whats real food?
fresh fruit
fresh vegetables
Meat and bread are 'iffy', bread if you can find a baker not that wrapped in plastic full of chemicals stuff. Same for meat, maybe if you can find an actual butcher.

Things like rice and noodles are also usually ok, but read the package.

I don't think a possessed chicken would be good for anyone.

1) Cook your own food, from whole natural foods, nothing processed.
2) 70% of your meal is veggies, fruits, nuts. Some organic or at least unprocessed chicken or fish and some good fats can round out the meal.

Find a way to spend more than $1 for a meal. The store your buying it from is making a profit from that. The distributor is making a profit. The manufacturer is making a profit. The farmer is making a profit. What you are actually getting is about 35 cents worth of food. Now what do you think they could be feeding you for that money? Let me put it to you this way, people that care about their dogs and know about good nutrition are feeding them better food than you are getting. If your grow as many fruits and veggies as you can it helps a lot in the summer time. The rest of the year eat as healthy as you can. If you think its expensive eating this way it is nothing compared to all of the doctors visits, cholesterol drugs, blood pressure pills, ...

Anyway....if you get rid of all of that crap you will get rid of your heartburn.

I have a similar issue with MSG except instead of heartburn it gives me non-stop hiccups. I can go months without eating a bit of anything with MSG (and months without hiccups) but within a few minutes of eating a dorito I'm hiccuping up a storm. MSG is definitely not good for us.

If MSG is poison, than that bottle of wine I drank is poison too. Since they are products of fermentation.

"According to some MSG opponents the glutamate added to foods is "bad" and the natural glutamate in our bodies is "good". MSG sellers argue that MSG is exactly like the glutamate in the human body, therefore it must always be "good". It is not so simple. There are contaminants in processed MSG. An anology that can be used is that there are right-handed amino acids and left handed ones. They are like mirror images of each other. Processed MSG contains not only the kind of amino acids the body is used to handling, but mirror image ones too."

In my honest opinion, MSG looks like the nicer/safer of "food additives" out there right now. Probably because it is close to natural.

Compare this one to all of this other junk that is highly artificial (synthesized).

When you eat 1 thing you are probably ingesting dozens of additives. Which any of them could make you sick or harm you, and then in the countless various combinations any weird type of chemical reactions could occur and create even more complex byproducts.

What I am saying is that just going after MSG appears to be a mistake. There are bigger culprits and far more dangerous additives found in just about everything.

No I am being serious, click on this link.

Take a glance at a list of some of the additives that are in virtually all of our food.

I don't think there is any way to avoid all of this stuff, unless you have your own farm.

I also have no clue how many of you are "so sure" it was MSG in the first place. It could have been a combination of all kinds of things. None of you did a actual scientific study to prove it was for sure the cause, did you? I am skeptical.

MSG is probably one of your causes, but there might be others. First for heartburn you can take some Apple Cider Vinegar in some water and sip it while you eat. It should help a great deal. I use 2 tablespoons to about 8 to 12 oz of water and sip about half the jar (I mix it in a small mayonaisse jar) per meal. Get the Apple Cider Vinegar with the "mother" in it. It will say that on it. It means it is full of all the enzymes.

Next, if you've had the hearburn since childhood, you might have a hiatal hernia. That's where the stomach gets stuck up into the diaphragm a little. Try this exercise to pull it out.

Lay on your left side (on your left side of your bed also), then take your right leg and drop it over the side of the bed (it acts as an anchor to keep your lower half on your side), then turn your upper body towards the right and lay it as flat against the bed as you can. Stay this way and relax for several minutes. It could take awhile so be patient. You might start to hear some gurgling as your stomach pulls out of the diaphragm and you might feel it pull also. Anyway, stay this way for a while, and you will probably have to do this often for awhile until the diaphragm closes up some.

Eventually, if it is a hiatal hernia causing your problem, this exercise should really help - which will help your heartburn as the stomach will be able to close properly to keep the acids down since its not pulled funny into the diaphragm.

This link goes to a Dr. Theodore Baroody who has a book there called Hiatal Hernia Syndrome - and it's full of helpful information.

Blessings.

=-o Never read this before -- sorry I'm new to the internet. I may have a hiatal hernia, but I don't how enough symptoms. I can tell you for a fact that when I eat MSG I feel sick, when I don't, I feel fine.

Dr. WebMD, I'd rather not eat MSG then drink vinegar with every meal.

Watch out for PLUMPED chickens - they'll all say "injected with a 15% solution" and it is about ALL of them now - who wouldn't want consumers paying 1.99 a pound for salt water? (Besides the informed consumer?)

I don't know if they use msg or not, sometimes it is just salt water, or salt water with a bit of carrageenan( sp?_)..but sometimes it says broth and a lot of broths have MSG in them.

I've got to look into MSG because it concerns me that my son tends to like foods best when it is IN them. IE Chicken Noodle soup is LOADED with it.

It's actually pretty basic science, when I eat food containing MSG I get sick. When I don't eat food containing MSG I don't get sick, Things containing large amounts of Msg really make me sick. Beer makes me drunk, when I don't drink beer I don't get drunk.
