G'day ATS Members

As a cell-phone "super user" who is in the medical technology area, I tend to give this some thought.

However, nobody has been able to prove there is a link between cell-phones & cancer.

Here are 2 more recent studies for your consideration:

Study 1:

From The International Journal of Epidemiology:

Meningioma and Mobile Phone use - A Collaborative Case-Control Study in Five North European Countries

Conclusions:

Our results do not provide support for an association between mobile phone use and risk of meningioma.

Study 2:

From The Journal of Clinical Oncology:

Conclusions:

The meta-analysis found that, overall, the use of cell phones was not significantly associated with the risk for tumors in a random-effects model meta-analysis. Compared with people who never or rarely used a cell phone, the odds ratio (OR) for the overall use of cell phones was 0.98 for malignant and benign tumors (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.89 - 1.07).

It's an interesting & important area, considering the massive prevalence of cell-phone use.

What do members conclude from these 2 studies?

Can I rest a little easier?

Kind regards

Apparently the meat is no good once they go to slaughter because the cattle that always graze beneath them are basically being cooked while they are still alive, grazing there under the power lines.

Now we don't go to slaughter of course, but the cell phone is said to have a similar effect as the power lines do on the cattle, except its on the human body

I will see if I can find where I read it. It might be here.

G'day dragonsmusic

The power line issue is an interesting one.

A few years ago, we had power readings taken professionally from beneath power lines in our neighbourhood (we don't live there now).

We did this because some of the kids were sometimes playing under these power lines. The readings were extremely low, in fact negligible. The readings were much lower than the comparative readings taken inside our own house!

The consultant then said he would take a reading from where the kids were playing out in an open grass area where there were no overhead power lines.

Guess what? The readings were much higher than those taken under the power lines. Why did that occur? Well, there was an underground power line that we didn't know about.

However even then, the power readings in our own house were much stronger.

It's an interesting area.

Thanks for that thoughtful reply.

G'day hornet68

I recall reading the old non-digital mobile phones had a higher power output than the new digital phones.

Do you know anything about that?

Charlie Teo is a brilliant guy & he can certainly get out there "on the edge" at times with his opinions.

I agree with you about minimising the time I spend with a mobile phone against my head.

I tend to put extreme limits on the amount of time I have a mobile phone against my head. By using Bluetooth technology, I avoid phone contact almost completely.

There were once medical studies that proved smoking was not harmful as well. We'll see where this issue stands in five years.

G'day riley

That's always the worry isn't it.......that we'll find out more in a few years.

Perhaps it's the hard lessons learned with things such as smoking, that enable researchers to be more thorough when they research things such as mobile phones.

I also think that as technology improves & knowledge increases, we are less prone to making mistakes such as we did with smoking.

My "1/2 educated guess" is that we won't find these phones are causing any major problems.

However, I still worry about it enough that I rarely (if ever) put one on the side of my head.

Kind regards
