A strong earthquake struck Humboldt County, California on Thursday afternoon, seismologists said.

The earthquake, which struck about 35 miles west-northwest of the small unincorporated community of Petrolia, had a preliminary magnitude of 6.0.

“The magnitude is such that a tsunami is not expected,” the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said in a statement. “However, in coastal areas of intense shaking, locally generated tsunamis can be triggered by underwater landslides.”

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties from the earthquake, which happened at 12.20 p.m. local time

typical first press release about this i suppose, very little actual info.. stay tuned.

Just saw this on BBC. Monitoring twitter and a little bit worries that no posts are actually coming out of the area. Early still though so hope it's all ok. Fingers crossed no one was hurt.

Any ATS members in the area?

EDIT: no tsunami warning issued

To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Information Statement issued 02/4/2010 at 12:23PM PST

At 12:20 PM Pacific Standard Time on February 4, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 6.0 occurred 50 miles/80 Km southwest of Eureka, California.

The magnitude is such that a tsunami IS NOT EXPECTED. However, in coastal areas of intense shaking, locally generated tsunamis can be triggered by underwater landslides. This will be the only WCATWC message issued for this event.

The location and magnitude are based on preliminary information. Further information will be issued by the United States Geological Survey or the appropriate regional seismic network.

Doesn't look like it. Wrong type of quake apparently although they said that underwater landslides could cause local tsunamis....

Uh-oh spaghettios. Hopefully it released some tension.

Sure have been a lot of quakes lately.

Oh, and strange solar activity.

89101 is the nearest recorder to the Epicenter, gives Max Velocity of the waves generated at 2.5cm/s.
No doubt buildings close to the shoreline could have some slight-moderate damage due to Liquifaction with this event.

A few tweets coming out of the area now. People saying they felt the shaking. No reports of damage as yet so it looks like this was a relatively harmless. Thankfully.

Did any of you know this is the location of where the first oil well in California was drilled?

"1861 First oil well in California is drilled manually in Humboldt County "

www.sjgs.com...

Drilling down to and draining out the oil from the earth's mantle is one of the theories behind some of the brutally intense weather and earth weather events we've had in the past two decades.
That and HAARP.
My fellow alternative thinkers, think about how much oil has been drained from California since then and that is ON TOP OF the massive fault lines that are already there.

That's so screwed up it's not even funny.

This sucks.

They just replaced the bulbs on their grow-lights from the last EQ.

Those bulbs are expensive.

Yep I'm Humboldt County for life!

It was apparently a ways off coast, but I felt the house shake for about 15sec.
It only felt like about a 3.5-4 mag.

I live near Eureka, that 6.5 last month was pretty big! If anyone is interested in my personal experience with that quake, and some related info check out this thread, my post is last, or near the bottom. 6.5 hits Northern Calif thread

Cheers

So yea dragonsmusic check out the link in i posted in my earlier post, about the 6.5 last month.

This defintely has nothing to do with HAARP and everything to do with plate tectonics and the Mendecino Triple Junction, where the Pacific, North American, and Gorda plates come together off the coast of Cape Mendecino.
The Pacific plate is subducting under the North American plate, and the Gorda plate is kinda getting squished and smashed in between them. It makes for some very interesting quakes...
