A high-ranking officer has acknowledged for the first time that the Israeli army went beyond its previous rules of engagement on the protection of civilian lives in order to minimise military casualties during last year's Gaza war, The Independent can reveal.

The officer, who served as a commander during Operation Cast Lead, made it clear that he did not regard the longstanding principle of military conduct known as "means and intentions"

Israeli commander finally admits that the rules of war were specifically changed for last year's Gaza engagement, in order to make sure that no IDF soldiers were harmed.

Nice to know that they don't worry about committing war crimes, all they have to do is rewrite their rules and it's suddenly OK.

In War there are no rules. Im not saying that its a good thing. But if you're a commander, you're job is to do whatever it takes to win, and to bring your boys home alive. War is an awful fact of life, and despite protest marches, it will always persist in our society.

The days of yore, when men would march towards each other and take turns firing are long gone.

Seems the best way to fight a war, you do not want your own troops killed if at all possible

Actually there ARE international laws regarding how warfare is to be performed.I know that proclaiming "There are no rules, this is WAR, son!" makes your penis feel Patton-sized... but it's a lie. There are rules and there are laws, and those who violate them need to b hauled off to the Hague.

Now it is clear to all the mind set of the murderers and their supporters (like WhiteDevil) for all to see.

They have absolutely no morals or regard to innocent people or reasons for why they are there in the first place.

Just psychotic killers that get a hard on for killing little brown children and brown people in general. Truly, a barbaric nation of racist murders who kill for hate and money.

Abu Ghariab.

Honestly, it is true. The root nature of war is kill, maim, and destroy to acheive your goal. Anything less than that is play fighting.

But that being said, we humans, in a valiant attempt to be more mature, have come up with international rules of law that are governed by treaties (such as the Geneva Conventions) that are meant to provide a framework within which war can be conducted without mass carnage and chaos. When someone breaks a rule that they have agreed to follow, they should be punished by the others who agreed to such rules.

That being said, perhaps the precise questions to ask here are:
1) Which rules (from which treaties, etc) were broken
2) Did Israel agree to obey the treaties, etc. from Question #1
3) Who has the chutzpah to punish those in the IDF and Israeli Government who are responsible for breaking the rules, if indeed any that they agreed to were broken?
