Thats a good idea, I know the local community college just started offering classes on Solar Panel installation and maintenance. If you could find something similar near your home stateside, you could get a jump on a new technology without breaking your bank. Not many people even realize the alternative energy jobs that will be more and more abundant in the years to come.

My little brother is taking a lazer/infrared technology course. He already has big offers from defense contractors. The government wants to send him overseas upon his completion of the course to work on Predator Drones...

If you're near LA, El Camino College is the one that offers the solar class last time I checked.

Also, my father owns a Plumbing company and a Fire Protection co, both union. If you think about learning a trade, Im sure we can help you get into the apprenticeship school. Cant promise anything, but just keep in mind when the time comes, I'll do what I can to assist a friend.

Can anyone tell me why this post "feels" as though it's going to be used for data mining?

What is the economy like? Well you know people are only going to tell you what they personally think about it, their personal opinion. As far as any prices going up, rent going up, and things like that, dude, you just get in touch with someone at home because that also varies across the whole country -- as always. And I know you can access news about the economy because you are using the internet. Basically all anyone can tell you about anything here is what they personally experience, and you should already know how wide the range of experiences is going to be here in the US, the melting pot, of all places.

Call me crazy but I couldn't help but get the feeling reading the OP that it was a total crock just to get a bunch of people to spew their personal feelings about life in the US so their general psychological state towards "how things are going" can be interpreted.

You want to know how it's going? It's going like this post.

This is ATS after all. You guys can dig a conspiracy theory, right?

Sure, can dig a conspiracy...

Won't find out anything new from my answer though... I am notorious for always suggesting more education. That's how I roll...

I could always be wrong. I just had a gut feeling reading the OP, something did not sound quite right about it.

When you get to El Paso, avoid the temptations of Juarez!

Glad to hear this good news.

What can you expect?

Whatever you make it to be!

Im thinking of becoming an electrician and then later on move to solar powering. I was always facinated on free energy that TPTB couldn't control since the sun is free.

Wonderful idea! Glad to hear you'll be getting back to civilian life. HUGS! Keep us posted!

You can't always believe what MSM spews out. Sometimes its best to interact with the local populace then hear the BS that the news says. The economy can very in many different ways depending on location and person. You of all people should know that by now.

Yeah no kidding, considering I just said as much in my post. That's why I figure if you really wanted a relevant answer you'd hit up one of your buddies in El Paso instead of asking us.

If I were you check in to learning how to install security systems. It is a hot business now.

If you are headed back to the valley, there is a aeronautical company in Burbank that is hurting for workers.Do you have a security clearance?

They are hurting because one of the requirements is a security clearance w which requires you to be a citizen. And no police record.

Something that is in short supply in SoCal.

Use your V.A. and go to ITT.

Let's see, the job market sucks, people went insane in the last election and there is no sign of them ever regaining their sanity, crime is up, pay wages if you are able to land a job are down, and worse still, there is the distinct possibility of a civil war in the future of America.

In short, welcome back!

Thanks for the welcome whatukno. I had no idea that life in the civilian sector was that bad since I live off a military economy meaning that I am always fed even if the food is crap. Always have shelter but not a promise when in the field or deployed and get paid a meager salary but comes with the above stated. With that said the civilian world sounds like a scary place to go into but im sure I will triumph where others have failed.

You could always move to Detroit, it's like being in a combat situation, well, combat isn't as dangerous as Detroit, and I am sure that Iraq has more buildings that haven't been burned out. But overall, um, well, never mind, you said you wanted out of the military life.

Isn't Detriot busted up anyway because of some clowns that rap about murder and being a jigalo? Anyways the main reason I want out the army because I am not learning anything that would benefit me as a civilian so im putting a stop to it and will be a man of action since the time for talking is over.
