This makes me wonder - maybe at some points in history, some spiritually/technologically advanced societies really DID live long lives?

You may want to look at this link: Li Ching-Yuen. I know it isn't very helpful, but it's just an example.

Countless times in history people have written about longevity. For example, in the Indian scriptures, ( I think it is anyway) they have shown how the number of years that people live to has decreased in each cycle.

I do believe that there is such things as longevity. Maybe the knowledge is lost or just kept away from us. I don't think there would be any reason to refering to living for a long time if they did not believe it.
