When I graduated from HS in 1972, the Vietnam war was still waging and the national draft was still in effect. I was as nervous as a russian looking for his lost vodka bottle at the prospect of being drafted on my 18th BD. Many of my friends already drafted were writing me of the nightmare associated with Vietnam...one of my closest friends did not make it back alive.

Two weeks from my BD, the draft ended. At the time I couldn't have been more elated. I saw myself as one of the lucky ones.

Being happy about the draft coming to an end did not take away from the fact that I would have done my part, if requested, to serve my country and possibly die for a war that was frought with political madness and needless confrontation. Me being afraid to die was irrelevant.

America is certainly not without political fault, but I would today, if requested, take a stand against any enemy of my country even if it meant taking a defensive position in my backyard. Why? Simply to defend what my country has given me in my lifetime...my freedom.

There has certainly been others who expressed similar, albeit more restrained points of view to yours, therefore I will not make assumptions, but ask straighforwardly: How did you vote?

No, I didn't vote . I didn't vote because I'm not a "coward" avoiding a draft.. If I avoid I draft it's because I have my own beliefs and I'm no coward, that's why I didnt vote.

I'm English, and have health issues that mean I couldn't be drafted, so I'm not going to have to make that decision.

I have to say the language in which the poll is phrased is very biased. Not going to war does not make one a coward. During the Blitz in England many conscientious objectors were assigned to rescue work and fire crews- not safe or cushy by any means, and not coward's work.

If I had to make that decision now, I'd be conscientiously objecting, because I will not take part in a war I believe is wrong. This doesn't mean I'm a coward. Propose a war to get the occupying Chinese out of Tibet, and I'll volunteer. I don't agree with this war and won't fight it.

I would fight if I felt my wife or I in direct danger. I'm a dual citizen, dad german, mom american. While I've lived a good portion of my life in the US and here as well it's hard to say. I dont think they'd take me if the Draft were re-enstated. With prior how should I say...police....encounters...plus a medical impairment and terrible vision, they wouldnt take me. I love the US and it's people, but again I wouldnt fight unless I felt I or my wife, or our future children were in direct and immediate danger.

I would have to put other...I was inlisted as an automated logistical specialist. (They said I was too tall to be a fighter pilot). However I probably have the shortest enlistment ever. 3 weeks before I was to ship off to basic I was sparring in a karate tourney and took a round kick to the back of my neck (Kick that is banned in most sparring competitions). Fractured my vertebre (Number 7). It healed and I am fine but I wasn't allowed in with that type of injury. So I guess I have one of the shortest stints you can have and still get an honorable discharge.
However if a war did break out and it made it to American soil, Army or not I'd fight to the death to save my family and friends.

My late mother was American Indian from Kansas and my father is a black man from Missouri. African American, Negro, Bro, whatever silly moniker you'd like to label him with, but if you ask him he'll respond the same way everytime... "I'm an American".

As for me I refer to myself as an American as well, I took no preferential treatment for schooling, or obtaining work, or in the census. Due to my straight hair from my Mom I pass as just about anything I want but I've never tried to hide my identity either. Thats one of the reasons I like Vin Diesel, for his own desire to keep them all guessing too!!

But one thing I can say is that everything I have, I've earned myself, and of all the things I've done in my life, that is what I'm most proud of.

All my black friends question my alligence but my loyalties can only be earned not given via birth color.
That and I married a white blonde woman. You should have seen the look on her dads family from Kentucky when I showed up with her for the family reunion in Lexington!! What a friggin' hoot man!!! She made me promise not to go ghetto on em, but damn it was tempting!!!
