Obama Surrendering Internet to Foreign Powers

newsmax.com

Without the ingenuity of America’s brightest minds and the investment of U.S. taxpayer dollars, there would be no Internet, as we now know it today.

Now, the Obama administration has moved quietly to cede control of the Web from the United States to foreign powers.

Some background: The Internet came into being because of the genius work of Americans Dr.Robert E. Kahn and Dr. Vinton G. Cerf. These men, while working for the Department of Defense in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency

I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing. Part of me doesn't trust the US to control anything, but on the other hand atleast our checks and balances would keep the control of the internet someone at the hands of the people.

One false move could be political suicide, seeing as every American loves a free internet. If we give that power to a non-governmental force, they have no political consequences if they choose to do something sinister.

noone actualy controls the internet these days, back in the old days yes, nowadays... noone person, except maybe cern can say they control it.

the internet is practicly an internet in itself now, america coudldc themself from the internet and start their own and it most likely wouldnt have much if any effect, except for not being able access sites based in usa and vise versa,.

Um... Actually they do. Each server is private, but if you control the DNS and routing, then you effectively control the internet.

It's like... People have private residences, but as long as the government controls the roadways, they can control access to those residence.

1) its newsmax...they are not a news agency, they are a propaganda machine aimed for the most dim witted soo far right that they make rush limbaugh look like a lefty liberal types.

2) this has already been threaded out..

3) the internet is not some giant hub somewhere...its a concept, a interconnection with tons of hubs, satellites, and all that spread out throughout the world...the internet was invented by the US with the concept of decentralizing the government should we end up getting nuked, we could still function. now its so big that half the world (any half) could simply vaporize and it would still be running fine. there is no owner of the internet...no great and almighty server in some bunker somewhere...This story makes about as much sense as "Obama gives control of oxygen to the middle east. now we must hope that the middle east keeps america supplied with oxygen."

seriously...dont goto newsmax..your just encouraging them to write more fake and completely insane news so long as they keep getting hits. Theres tons of other hardcore corporate sponsored conservative nutjob websites you can support...let them die the death they deserve.

No, Tim Berners-Lee invented Hypertext. The internet was developed by the folks at ARPA. There was an internet long before the web came into existence.

Not true, a new study shows Americans favor more restrictions and laws on the internet to prevent certain things be looked at, read or seen

Not really, in fact no one controls the internet. The DNS just turns the ip in a domain name. Without a DNS the internet would still work, only that it would not use domain names but an IP. You can't really block an IP all over the internet. An IP can be controled only by authorities such as RIPE. Even if Ripe would ban your ip then you could broadcast on a dinamic IP. There is no way to block the internet , they would of stoped it by now, you could be sure of that. The internet is just a big network. The only way I see blocking the internet is by blocking the protocol, that would imply that all companies that make internet browsers secure somehow the browsers with passwords. That would also result in an epic fail since most of the software is hacked. People would just get a hacked version of internet explorer or something like that. Goverment does not own the lines and authorities that control ip names , dns records are civilian non govermental institutions. You could use the phone lines, hook up a server, and offer information, by calling at that phone number and .Bam@!@# you are connected, so you could even use a phone number to connect like they did in the old days with BBC servers hooked up on phone numbers.

Obama has made it clear for quite awhile now how much he hates America, so him doing this doesn't surprise me..
And if it helps his agenda to further us away from sovereignty he will do it. He is on more than one payroll

It's a matter of real interest to remember that the internet was created by - the AMERICAN military research and development department known as DARPA - who in turn set up the Backbone connector hubs within the secure structures of AMERICAN Military compounds. whether it be over seas, or on American soil, every DARPA backbone was installed on a military base - to protect this development that supported American military communication networks.

now, lets consider the domain structures that have developed over the decades.

the original domain started with .COM (which doesn't stand for Commercial, like the domain .MIL stands for Military. .COM stands for a DOS executable based COMMAND structure - by which the internet IS STILL controlled by today).

Those alternative domains, such as government domains, educational and entertainment based domains, and ultimately international domains all are still backwards compatibly controlled by the originating .COM interface internally, meaning it will ultimately have to stream back to the backbone installation it originated from - on an American military base somewhere in around the world and close to you (hey E.U.... now you know where ECHELON is located!). That includes China. =)

True, China controls port functions and such for their country, but when it comes to the internet, America will fall first before it loses it's control over the internet... and you can take that to the bank!

It seems like everytime I view ATS or the news on TV I hear about another American enhanced idea or product has been sold out to other countries interest.

When will natural born Americans have to apply for citizenship to this great nation?

exactly, private, not public and controlled by the state,.

isp's are the gatekeepers these days, they control the data that goes through to the E.U. , not the governments, if that was the case the web would be ALOT different trust me!

(ive worked for isp's for the last 3 years, 2 of the uk's biggest)

Sorry guys - VERISIGN owns the Internet - they OWN ALL the registries for "ALL" the Domain names -if that goes 1/2 to 3/4 of the users are MIA the others know how to use DNS & IP address to get where they need to go.....
