Unexplained Explosion on the Sun (breaking news)

Found this on space weather, seems like quite a spectacular explosion.

Coronagraphs onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) have just observed a bright double-ringed coronal mass ejection (CME) billowing over the sun's western limb. At present, the source of the blast is unknown Watch the movie and stay tuned for updates.

Very nice find,s&f. what is the bright object on the left? I am guessing venus or some other planet.Have there been any other explosions recorded like this ? What effect if any could this have on the earth?

Further more could it be linked to this www.abovetopsecret.com... wild guess but could an asteroid impact cause such an explosion. Please forgive my ignorance on this subject just throwing the idea out there.

Not too sure what the explosion is yet.

I'm checking out SOHO to see if there is any more info.

The bright object is definitely Venus.

Great thread Chadwickus, very interesting , my depth of knowledge in this field is rather grim, i think this is just the thread to start my learning of SOHO.

The source is currently unexplained.

It's not sunspot 1043 because that is located in the upper hemisphere and the CME appears to be around the equator.


Maybe another new sunspot?

it is a CME. The source of this CME is what's got them puzzled.Sunspot 1043 is way up higher.

Why is there so much stuff quickly moving around in the sequence, whilst planetary bodies move very slowly? Surely they can't all be asteroids?

I don't see an answer there but I do see a possible re-flaring of sunspot 1041.

Just another CME from the old active sunspot.
Not heading our way so nothing to worry about.
