Well personally I think this would be seriously an awesome feature to add to ATS, I mean not just because of "randomness" (awesome word btw) but because it would be pretty sweet to just click this button and there you are on some random thread and think like the OP says how it could bring up some amazing threads that have been forgotten over the years.

It's a great idea.

I vote we have this button!

(Flagged as well)

You could also go to any random thread and adjust the thread number in the url. But a random button just seems more fun, though.

See now that's the kind of resourcefulness that I like to see. We don't need no Easy Button, just punch in some random thread numbers.

One more button and we'll need instructions that look like an F-14 manual to navigate around.

Alert
Ignore
Star
Flag
Friend
Foe
Member Tools dropdown with 147 options some going to a whole new set of options
Media Center

It's all pretty random to me, already.

Now you've got me going in a completely different direction.

A Random button tht has completely random functionality!

Maybe it takes you to a random thread. Maybe it gives you 20 flags. Maybe it sends an alert on the last thread you posted in. Maybe it films you at your desk and creates a streaming video in the Media Center. Maybe you ban yourself.

Now we've got something to work with. I can find random threads by myself all day, but a button I press where the results are totally unknown...

Take it a step further. If you are on the main page it can take you to a random topic from anywhere. If you are in Skunk Works, New World Order, or where ever, it only brings up topics from that section. Then it actually becomes a way for people to find new topics in areas of interest.

Then we could split the "recent post" section in to new and revived threads. Anything over 21 days old comes up in the revived section. Maybe anything with an original post date older than 45 days old would come up in the revived area. This keeps new topics from being bumped out of sight. Of course you could add a filter button instead of having two different recent post sections.

Making work for other people is so much fun.

This is good stuff indeed. Imagine the knowledge dug up from the past with the push of a button and who knows maybe we find a thread that is very relevant to today's problems. Im for it.
