This is stunning! The moon and the Sun 'merged' into one. The moon's surface is clearly visible but it is also highlighting the Sun's corona in a way that can only make you marvel at nature. I think a quote is appropriate here:

“When you realize how perfect everything is you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky”

-Buddha

The annular solar eclipse that was visible earlier this month in parts of Africa, the Indian Ocean and Asia yielded some beautiful photographs of the moon obscuring the light from the sun.

But none of them provided the kind of exquisite detail that a team of astronomers watching from the Marshall Islands captured during last summer’s total solar eclipse. By combining 31 images of the eclipse shot with a Canon EOS 5D, the composite shows the incredible structure of the sun’s corona stretching out from occluded central disc. The moon’s surface details are also clearly visible. Read More www.wired.com...

Me neither, it kind of caught me off guard the first time I saw it.

I did a quick google search and I came up with this:

apod.nasa.gov...

If it's real, then this has happened before.

Beautiful stuff.

Here's a case where the corona can be seen during an eclipse, from 2006:

Not as perfect as the one above though. I still don't understand how the moon can be faintly seen.

2009 one an annular eclipse maybe, so rings of sunlight reflect back from the Earth, but still the moon's a far enough distance away for coronal effects to be visible.

Take a look at these two pictures they show two very different corona.

Compare this picture with the OPs. See how different they are. Its like the OPs picture of 2009 show the suns N and S pole quite clearly.

That's strange. Does it have anything to do with the angle or perhaps the technology that was used to take the photos?

Is it normal for the corona to look so different? I'm aware that this photo is from 2001 and that the other is from 2009.

Awesome pic, thank you tons for sharing this.

For sure this is desktop background wallpaper material!!

Isn't it neat how the Moon perfectly creates nearly exact eclipses? What are the odds that it would be in such a position randomly that it would match up with the size of the sun so well??

And then throw in the dark side / light side phenomena.

Our moon is extremely mysterious, and amazing!
