The problems began after news broke that Phillips intended to profit from the convention—which costs $549 a person for access to both the conference and Palin’s banquet, or $349 for a ticket to the dinner alone.
Holy Highway Robbery Batman!! There is a big problem right there.
Love them or hate them - one of the premise of the tea-parties was that they were attended by the "common people". A premise that would seem to be born out by the videos of the events. I don't remember seeing too many people there that looked like they could easily drop over $1000 for a night out with the spouse.
They are pricing the thing way out of the reach of his market - and trying to turn it into something the tea-parties were supposed to be against.
