Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips likely assumed that scoring a dinner speech by the former Alaska governor and GOP vice presidential candidate would guarantee a huge turnout for his National Tea Party Convention, scheduled to start Feb. 4 at Nashville's Gaylord Opryland Hotel. But according to Tea Party insiders, the tickets for the Palin banquet aren't selling—and some conservative activists who have already paid to attend are now demanding refunds. With the controversial event shaping up to be a potential flop, some Tea Partiers are urging Palin to cancel her speech to avoid a humiliating public relations disaster.

The problems began after news broke that Phillips intended to profit from the convention—which costs $549 a person for access to both the conference and Palin’s banquet, or $349 for a ticket to the dinner alone. With one prominent conservative blogger charging that the event seemed "scammy," several key sponsors yanked their support, including the National Precinct Alliance, the American Liberty Alliance, American Majority, and the Federation for American Immigration Reform. As the rash of bad press continued, this week Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), announced that she’s considering pulling out as a convention speaker.

Apparently there are some dissatisfied folk with the coopting of the TPM my GOP big wigs.

What's next for the TPM? Will they reform as the grassroots orginization as intended, fold completely, or knuckle under to the neocons.

America needs a third political party, but one that actually represents the man in the street, not just more corporate pandering.

Holy Highway Robbery Batman!! There is a big problem right there.

Love them or hate them - one of the premise of the tea-parties was that they were attended by the "common people". A premise that would seem to be born out by the videos of the events. I don't remember seeing too many people there that looked like they could easily drop over $1000 for a night out with the spouse.

They are pricing the thing way out of the reach of his market - and trying to turn it into something the tea-parties were supposed to be against.

You can not be serious. Some huckster puts the words "Tea Party" in his promotion, pays a celebrity a high price to speak. He loses money and credibility and you blame an un-related political group and the SPEAKER?

What if, instead of "Tea Party Nation", Phillips had created "Barack Nation? Then tried to sell shoddy tee shirts or snack foods or other ripoffs with Sean Penn as advertising?

According to your logic, the failed scams are a reflection on Barack and Sean, rather than the scammer.

So if I package up my dog's droppings a "Barack Obama Tea Bags" they must actually be a fusion of the president and the TPM, no?

I will bet that you believe that if something is advertised, on TV or elsewhere, "it must be true."

No mention of a TPM anywhere in there, except in your imagination, or in your intent to deceive.

There is nothing in your OP that proves any connection or endorsement of Phillips' scam by the Tea Party Movement, the Tea Party Patriots, or ANY "Tea Party" political movement.

Give up, already. You've already lost in NJ, MA, and VA. TN scams will not stop or deter the conservative groundswell.

You should try harder next time. Maybe there are grownups to help you.

Deny ignorance.

There are plenty of viable third parties that have been in existance for quite some time. I've been a "card carrying" member of the Libertarian Party for twenty years. Yeah, I know, I'm throwing my vote away. The TPM will perish without a platform and competent leadership.

I thought that the gala affair was to promote exGov. Palin as the leader of the TPM and use her background as a contender for the 2012 presidential elections by a third party. She has campaign experience, a platform and a proven leader land she's hot as hell.

I said "competent" leadership. Having a celebrity at the helm may not be the best idea. But hey, if you like her, good for you. Each to his own. Choice is what it's all about.

I think some, maybe a lot, of the dwindling support for the Tea Party Convention has to do with Sarah Palin. She has recently endorsed John McCain in his bid for re-election in his home state and is campaigning for him. A lot of "real" conservatives are calling her a RINO (Republican in Name Only) and boycotting her speech.

The Tea Party movement gets its strength from its position as "outsiders" to the corrupt political process.

If their keynote speaker does not seem conservative enough that will also discourage True Believers from attending.
