It's a military skill and, in my opinion of course, mandatory with any weapon you carry for self defense...

Why?

Simple

What if it jams in the dark and your in the "heat of it"? Use a flashlight and give yourself away, or clear it in the dark..

I share the thought as well.
I've focused on various "support" issues and tasks the last few years, any developed skill is great in the tool box.

I've actually had to do it, in the dark, in the Marines

Carrying two weapons has it own issues. I know, I carry two every day of my life with two more long guns in my trunk.

Not being perfectly familiar with your weapon, in light or dark, is just plain foolish and for all intents and purposes.

Same place I learned to do it, even though I was a squid.

I think that it is a good skill to have. Incidentally, if anyone is looking to have better visual acuity after dusk, spend the last two hours of daylight wearing red lenses over your eyes. I have done it and it really works.

Thirty minutes is all it takes for your eyes to adjust to darkness. That is the old standard in star-gazing. Actually, if you are out from dusk to darkness, it about takes care of itself. Star-gazers with 'scopes or naked eyes all use red lenses on their lights to keep their night vison when consulting charts or adjusting their equiment.
