Life evolving is a Darwinian race a struggle, survival means violence, life on other planets most probably evolved the same way as life on earth. After viewing the "pale blue dot" (Carl Sagan) , a photo taken 6 billion km from earth by Voyager 1 i am quite sure that this dust speck in space we call earth is not that valuable to other species, it is most probably insignificant and perhaps that we are lucky just because.

Here's the way I look at it:

If aliens show up and are...

...hostile:
They'll let us know they're coming by first sending us a lovely series of inbound "gifts" from the Kuiper and asteroid belts. By the time they get here in person, they won't have much of a problem of humans getting in the way of whatever it is they want. Any remaining human population would be way more worried about merely surviving the fallout than about resisting alien demands for resources.

...benevolent:
They'll give us a nice call and maybe give us a few pointers along the way. They'll want to keep in touch yet also keep some distance until we seem to be more comfortable about their presence. If anything, they're the ones more guillable about us.

...indifferent/amicable:
They'll stay out of sight but watch what we're doing. They may leave a calling card object out in orbit amongst the Kuiper or asteroid belt. Probably something like a Bracewell probe ranging in size from that of a suitcase to a refrigerator. Other than its observer function it's also a ready to use computer with "email" and a basic encyclopedia of what they know onboard. If we're smart enough to go out there and find it amongst our local floating space rocks (which is obviously difficult and requires technical proficiency), then we're also smart enough to be worthy logging on and joining in the conversation. (Also because the ability to find the artifact means we'll be at the point where we can actually start building real spaceships instead of putzing about the backyard in tiny orbital campers. Asteroid mining, heck yeah!) But until then, these aliens will remain quiet while watching from a distance.
