Anatomically modern humans have lived on this planet for 100-200 thousand years. Our civilization has existed for only 10 thousand years, that's one-tenth the amount of the total existence of humans. Before 10 thousand years ago, humans lived on this planet without destroying the environment, killing off massive amounts of species, imbalancing ecosystems at an unsustainable rate, or increasing population/resource consumption beyond sustainable levels.

The reality is, our civilization itself is the scourge/rash on the planet, NOT the human species. Humans can, have, and do live on this planet sustainably (though in far less numbers now, after centuries of native/aboriginal genocides/assimilation). We are not doomed, we are not magically different and more evil than other species on the planet, we are simply living in a culture that places us outside of the community of life that we depend upon, having us exploit it rather than live in balance with it. This has all happened in a relatively VERY short amount of time and at an exponential rate. We now live in an extremely unprecedented time and we must all open our eyes, look around us, and work seriously to change our present/future radically and for the better.

You should replace global capitalism with global corporations.

Global capitalism encourages green energy?? Pollution is bad for business?? Imperialism has nothing to do with capitalism??

You have got to be kidding me. You are absolutely wrong on all counts. You're putting your mind in some lofty idea of what capitalism is without looking around you at its REAL in-practice results/consequences. Capitalism VERY MUCH encourages multiple different forms of imperialism, it has massively ACCELERATED (with the industrial revolution) the destruction of the environment as well as pollution in general. Capitalism also has produced many advancements, HOWEVER, it has also suppressed TRUE advancement by suppressing long-lasting, sustainable, quality products/technology that SHOULD have existed decades ago. Ever heard of planned obsolescence? Capitalism thrives on endless consumption, if it actually produced solutions to our problems, the entire system would collapse. It's time to invent a new system that works for us and the environment rather than exploiting/forcing us and the environment to work for it. Capitalism, however, is not the main culprit. The main culprit is our entire civilization, at least in its most basic, unquestioned tenets. Most people don't even realize the tenets exist they're so pervasive/accepted.

Nope. Anatomical humans have existed for longer than our own species. While 200,000 years ago our form, as you see today, evolved, we as a species evolved much later down the line. Our species is only 50,000 years old. 50,000 years ago our species, which had already existed in this form for 150,000 years, evolved not externally, but internally. Our species was cast to the forced of nature, and we had to change our ways to survive. The problem? Those ways are not fit for the modern world. Modern humans, our species, evolved 50,000 years ago. And since then, we have been growing exponentially. It took 20,000 years for the first formal cultures to form, 10,000 more from that for the first villages. Then we were delayed for 10,000 years from the ice age, but we got back to it after.

So actually, it is our nature to be this way. We can only hope to find world with resources to feed us and eventually direct data imports tot he brain will allow common sense for all.

Great............another Hippie. To think that we thought that time machines were a modern idea. Clearly, they had them back in the 70's. Really though, in all respect to the timeline you need to go back to your own time .....and speak of nothing you saw here.

So The Matrix has been playing mostly all week on AMC and here comes a post about "your" revelation about how humans have become viruses, coincidence? probably.... Seriously I have never been to another forum that has soo much self loathing and depressive people as I've seen on ATS, we get it, you love animals and people don't deserve to live...

No. Mutilation of capitalism caused those problems. Just as mutilation of socialism caused problems. Originally, writers of the system were basically described what we today can call capitalistic socialism. Kings, queens, and presidents took the system and used it to greater their God, glory, and, country. That's capitalism. That's nationalism called capitalism.

If we go back to the original model of self regulation and competition of ideas, the system works. As a matter of fact, pure socialism and pure capitalism are kind of similar.

As such, a nation running under pure capitalistic socialism would be the greatest ever. Hospitals and doctors would be payed by how many people they save and get benefits for speed and quality. The government would directly pay doctors and hospitals based on their work, and this would encourage competition, innovation, and advancement , as opposed to treating everyone equally crappy (mutilation of socialism), or treating everyone unequally as consumers for insurance (mutilation of capitalism). We would see energy companies payed by the government for continuing good service. If they could keep the rates of service but lower the consumption of resources or output of pollution, they would get payed more. Two power companies exist, power company A manages to supply a ratio of large people vs low emissions. Their yearly paycheck for services would be greater because their ratio is better. This would be low regulated government socialism encouraging capitalism. Those power companies would want to be green for better income. Under a derivative of this system where the consumer still pays rather than the government, the government would lower their taxes. Power company A would receive a 10% tax deduction, and all other power companies would receive a 10% tax hike divided by the number of companies.

That's what was suppose to happen. The government plays no role in private industry or ongoings other than taxes and reward/punishments. The government would be a consumer just like anyone else, just a very big one.

So sorry, but I am not wrong on all accords. Modern capitalism is not capitalism. It is economic enslavement and no competition of ideas. Modern socialism, like Obama claims to be doing, is not socialism. it is bureaucratic socialism, AKA fascism.

The simple fact is that capitalism encourages no government bureaucracy, competition of ideas, and income from those ideas. Socialism encourages caring for your fellow man and advancing in his name.

Due to human nature both systems in their pure form are nonfunctional. The government's role is nothing more than acting as the wall for human nature, bouncing the ball that represents it back into the court for the game.

I do find it quite sad that this even needs to be posted - Everyone should already know this stuff. (I'm not saying that the OP's post was unneeded)
However, we must remember that we humans are indeed animals, we need to eat to live. This is where I sometimes have arguments with vegetarians who say meat is murder, plants are the only living things in this planet that only consume sunlight for energy, not other living things.

True, we don't need to pollute to be alive, but this is where the human stupidity strikes us once again. It is ironic that we think we are smarter than animals when we destroy our surroundings and they don't.

We need to find ways to stop pollution and get people to realize that "money" and "materialism" is NOT the way we should live. Economic slavery is just wrong and I fail to see why some people just don't understand it.

The point where we humans, as a species realize our faults and try to lose them, is where we stop producting unneeded "poop" for living. It is also the point where this is most likely in vain, as I don't see people realizing this in another hundred or two years.

Sure, planting trees and stopping tests on animals and whatnot is a good thing, however like stated by the OP, the harms of us is ten thousand times worse than the good some of us try to do.
It doesn't mean we should stop, it just means we should get other people to realize this and tear down the factories and stop trying to make unneeded products for living. Sure, transportation is a "nice thing to have" but we don't NEED it to live. We have feet which we can use to walk with. We have skills to build boats that DONT pollute to cross seas. We just don't like to use them anymore as there are "faster" ways available. And this is once again, the stupidity of mankind.

omg this is the most true post iv read on this thread. hes right we do things that due to the human way of thinking are morally wrong but thats INSTINCT all living things have 1 thing in common, they do everything they can to insure that their DNA is passed on even if that requires destroying threats to their species or finding more food to prevent starvation.

look at it this way. If humans could only survive in salt water sharks would would eat us into extinction. what would the other fish in the other fish in the ocean say about the sharks? If we where not on the top of the food chain then something else would be. Right now we are at the top of the food chain...or so we think. Whatever means we use to stay there are are just part of our tool bag. Dirlling for oil to make gas for a car so we can dirve to our job so we can make money so we can pay for someone to butcher a cow so we can eat. Or we could just go out as a tribe and and kill that cow with our bare hands. Either way the effect on the environment would be the same. A gun that took 100 people to make or 100 people to kill the a cow with their bare still have to feed 100 people. Every living thing on this planed could be classified as a virus. Humans have the edge. The edge lets us one up on everhging else on the planet. If not us it would be ants, birds, cows, or something else. Being on tops means you are smart but it also means you are able to see your demise. There is no way to avoid this. If we only ate salad the rabits would starve. There is no way to win.

I remember our sushi talk some time ago. Even in ancient times man has hunted and killed animals not just for food but for sport. I feel sory for the animals here in Iraq that look like the living dead because of the environment around them and how the Iraqis treat them. Why is it so god damn hard to live in peace with both humans and animals? The corporations are mainly responsible for the polluttion they spew from their toxic factories that threaten both us and the animals.
$&F for keeping it real Rain.

It's simple Stop-loss, religion has taught humanity that animals are here for us to rape and pillage and mean nothing of value to God.

It's ok to kill all the soulless animals because only human souls go to heaven right?

Man needs to become the caretakers of the world and stop destroying it. All these animal sacrifices in religion has to have influenced this lack of love and compassion towards the lesser sentience of the world.

You are free to believe what you wish but if I truly believed as you do, I would kill myself. How do you live with yourself?

Yes, extinction is a natural event. it happens. Unfortunately, we are responsible for a great many extinctions that would not have happened save for human intervention. Your argument is like telling someone "Well, you're going to die anyway, what's it hurt if I shoot you in the face?"

The problem isn't so much that species are going extinct. It's that they are going extinct due to human greed and carelessness. we're a reasoning kind of creature, and could very easily simply step around instead of running it over with a bulldozer.

I agree Dreaming. Why does religion have to be so mean to animals by saying they don't have souls so we can kill as many as we want and not feel guilty. I feel sad everytime I think about my dog who died when the tainted dog food incident happened because the dog food makers failed to realize what was in the food. Its time to let people know that animals matter in this world and if they go away then we might possibly become extinct as well

Yeah, us humans are an interesting species, spreading destruction wherever we go, especially where industry are concerned. Money is a big part of what does this. I mean sure some of these photos are from "traditional" abusive activities (ie hunting, cock fighting, etc) but some are also issues caused by greed and industry destroying habitat. Another big thing is lack of education in many countries, without being educated about how important every species is this sort of violent behavior will continue...

Yes we do some horrific things but we are also part of nature. I think that this psychological divide, the belief we are separate from or better than animals, leads to much of this behavior. We as a species must learn to respect each other AND all the animals and lifeforms on this planet, at least those we aren't killing for survival. Animal versus animal when it comes to survival, when it comes to food, is perfectly natural but much of this other killing isn't...

We should concentrate on not killing each other first, if we can learn to do that there might just be hope to stop the cruelty against other species.

I'll share a very true story, you will probably think I am a tad looney but I do not have any reason to lie about it.

When I was 17 I had a beautiful friend who was my family dog. During the end of his life, I had a very powerful dream where my dog was on a table, and was dying. I remember my family being there and my father was crying.

Because of that dream, I made sure to spend a lot more time with my dog. We went to the park more, played more. I dedicated a lot more time to him. Two months later I would get a call from my father to come to the Vet because our dog was dying.

And exactly as I dreamt it... my dog was on the vet table and was going to be put down due to a heart attack and my father was crying.

I didn't cry, I said goodbye to my friend and let him go. I was grateful for the warning and was grateful for all the extra time we spent.

To get even more crazy world... That week, I would be woken up into a dream. My dog was sitting on my chest, he was pure energy and spirit, very matrix looking with blue sparks of energy flowing around him. I get up in this "dream" fully awake and we go out and play.

This happened for about 2 weeks after he died, we would be in this awakened dreamstate playing until finally he moved on.

So... if it taught me anything... he was just as spiritual, just as real as I was, and was a very good dog in life, and in my wacky dreamworld that I also play in.

Animals are also spiritual beings and are capable of one thing we forget... love.

I've had a few dreams about my dog years ago before she died. I think I should have spent more time with her instead of being here in ghetto a$$ Iraq. Ironically she died around dhristmas day on my last deployment here. I think Jesus killed my dog with tainted dog food
. However I have no proof of this so ill let it go. Thanks for sharing your memories with me and hopefully things go smooter for this world for humans and animals.
