Israel Threatens Palestinian Authority: Defer UN Vote on Goldstone or Face 'Second Gaza'

www.globalresearch.ca

The request by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the United Nations Human Rights Council last year to postpone the vote on the Goldstone report followed a particularly tense meeting with the head of the Shin Bet security service, Haaretz has learned. At the October meeting in Ramallah, Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin told Abbas that if he did not ask for a deferral of the vote on the critical report on last year's military operation, Israel would turn the West Bank into a "second Gaza."

Some highlights from the article:

Diskin, who reports directly to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, threatened to revoke the easing of restrictions on movement within the West Bank that had been implemented earlier last year. He also said Israel would withdraw permission for mobile phone company Wataniya to operate in the Palestinian Authority. That would have cost the PA tens of millions of dollars in compensation payments to the company.

Here we go again..threats for "Second Gaza" i.e, Second Cast Lead. Wow' that's cheap even for the standard of Israel.

If people remember correctly last year Israel threatened to close down a economic project when UN was contemplating GoldStone Report.

Israel is threatening to kill off a crucial West Bank economic project unless the Palestinian Authority withdraws a request to the International Criminal Court to investigate alleged Israeli crimes during last winter’s Gaza war.

Shalom Kital, an aide to defence minister Ehud Barak, said today that Israel will not release a share of the radio spectrum that has long been sought by the Palestinian Authority to enable the launch of a second mobile telecommunications company unless the PA drops its efforts to put Israeli soldiers and officers in the dock over the Israeli operation.

If Israel has nothing to hide, why afraid? By using such tactics of threats it has proved once again it has no intention of peace.

It doesn't seem to be a threat of war but of economic punishment. Why are you suggesting that Israel threatened a war against the West Bank when this clearly isn't what was said?

Considering that Fatah pushed for Operation Cast Lead and provided key intelligence on targets' whereabouts etc, I'm not surprised by this. For Fatah to support UN "war crimes" accusations is hypocritical in the extreme.

Yes, what are they hiding indeed. Why threaten economic punishment unless they drop the case against Israeli soldiers and officers?

Surely if they did nothing wrong then they have nothing to fear with thse people being taken to court?

Not a threat? What does it mean "Second Gaza"? He is referring to Cast Lead.

Clearly (reading the article you posted) he's referring to blockades, economic divestment, withdrawal of freebies such as benefits to the West Bank's unemployed. That kind of thing.

Hmm..now that you say that, it does seem likely he may have meant economic blockade. But after economic blockade another Cast Lead can't be far behind. New land for settlements..change of scenery etc.

What? Of course it means economical sanctions - but this is beyond stupid even this way. West bank is living relatively normal life, with routine "dead here, dead there" peace process thingy. If Israel is going to escalate things out of the blue, so surely will Palestinian leaders. Why turn West bank into Gaza??
Even if one is to put aside moral implications, West bank economy is blooming and people who have things to loose in case of outbreak of violence - will not be easily brainwashed into placing death above life. So -what is this all about?
Can't he see - PLO leaders cannot support Israel in Gaza case even if they wanted to, since Hamas will use it to gain even more influence. This threat is just like poking hornets nest with nothing to gain. I hope they know what they are doing.

If extremists take control in the West Bank and spend the next ~8 years shelling and bombing Jewish communities in Israel then you may be right. I wouldn't worry about it just yet though.
