3 Lebanese soldiers, journalist killed in clash on Israel-Lebanon border

The Lebanese army confirmed that two of its troops had been killed when Israeli forces fired on a vehicle in which they were traveling, setting it on fire and wounding another.

In Lebanon, security sources said that Israeli shells fired at the southern Lebanese border village of Aadassi hit a house, wounding two - a soldier and a civilian.

Lebanese troops responded with artillery fire, Lebanese press reports said, while eyewitnesses said fire had broken out in two buildings in the village.

"It started when the Israelis wanted to cut a tree down inside Lebanon," one security source in Lebanon said. "The Lebanese army fired warning shots at them and they responded by shelling."

So it started because of an Israeli provocation...

IMO if war doesn't start within 2 weeks, it won't happen this year. Maybe in October due to the ``October surprise`` and the US mid-term elections. Hezbollah accusation of spies and the whole thing could create lots of trouble INSIDE LEBANON. A big political crisis, even worse case scenario another civil war could break out in Lebanon.

Would you rather Israel to shoot unguided munitions?
Your suggestion for Israel approach to peace is pretty funny since rockets started to fall on Israeli territory in thousands AFTER Israel withdrew from Gaza. So if Israel will withdraw from West bank and Hamas will be the leading force, logical conclusion will be that rockets from there would start to fall on Israel too.

I would rather Israel did not see fit to state unguided rockets that most of the time miss their target justifies a crippling collective blockade of Gaza, air strikes, naval gunfire, artillery, invasion, the use of phosphorous and the mass killing of Palestinians without regard for lives.

Ah yes, the old "Hamas continue to attack us after we withdrew!" arguement, neglecting to mention the crippling and inhumane blockade of Gaza by sea, air and land, forcing Palestinians to get their basic needs via tunnels and the occasional checkpoint, when it's open. If Israel withdraws from the West Bank, and lifts it's blockade of Gaza, and lifts it's blockade of the West Bank, then perhaps peace talks could begin.

Majority of rockets for years are qassam 2 or qassam 3 type.

Modified M-8 with wheels, and a glorified firework compared to Israeli munitions.

Indeed. Qassam with 5-10 kgs of explosives is standard. Rocket itself weights almost 30kgs. And only thing mass produced in Gaza with any standard are those rockets. Or you consider Palestinians incapable to cook an explosive in area they control? This is pretty racist.

Nice slur and insult. No actually that was pathetic.

Palestinians don't always acquire X amount of explosive because they can not get that amount because of the conditions in Gaza.

I do not believe in answering rockets with peace talks. Israel allready withdrew from Gaza (without any blockade at the time) and result is clear to me. As long as Hamas attacks Israel there should be no talks with them. Fatah in West Bank does not use any rockets. And with them there are peace talks.

The Palestinian fighters don't believe in answering helicopter warships, warplanes, warships, artillery and tanks with peace talks either. Israel maintains a blockade on Gaza so has not withdrawn from Gaza. As long as Israel attacks Palestinians there will be no talks with them in the Palestinian's eyes. Fatah does not use any rockets because they falsely believe Israel is serious about peace.

Peace talks? That's funny, I thought the US were trying to pressure Abbas into talking with Israel when Abbas seems to realise now Israel are not serious about peace, because they continue settlement expansion and undermining the Palestinians.

Oh, and for suggesting I'm a racist? Usual Pro-Israeli Zionist trick aimed at those who criticise Israel's actions. Although usual suggestion is to those who criticise Israel's actions that they are racist against Jewish people, not Palestinians.

Classic trick: Make slurs about people who criticise Israel. Suggest they are racist, that will work!

But suggesting I am racist against Palestinians is a new one! Evidently because suggesting that people are anti-Jewish racists for criticising Israel's actions no longer works or is valid.

Well guess what? Neither is suggesting that a critic of Israel's actions is an anti-Palestinian racist.

It suggests you were losing the arguement, it suggests you sunk to slurs out of desperation.

The racism accusation slur is old and it's boring and it's pathetic and predictable and wrong, and I should have known it would come sooner or later because of me being critical of Israel's actions. And you are now on ignore as a result.

Hisham Jaber, Retired Lebanese Army General, claims Israel did not turn border incident into a war on Lebanon because they were testing the Lebanese military's willingness to defend their territory, and because he feels Hezbollah can only be destroyed by Israel if another Lebanese Civil War breaks out, in which he says Israel will hope to capitalise and intervene.

Jaber is referring I think to the rumoured UN tribunal indicting Hezbollah members for the murder of Rafik Harriri. He believes Israel is hinging on a Lebanese Civil War to break out as a result of this, and he awaits Hezbollah Leader's Nasrallah's statement that on Monday he will reveal evidence Israel was behind Harriri's death.

Jaber continues he believes it was in Israel's interest to see Hariri killed in 2005. It resulted in Syria being blamed and being pressured to withdrawing from Lebanon, and the next year, 2006, saw the Israel-Lebanon War break out.

Retired Lebanse Army General Hisham Jaber was speaking to Al Jazeera English's Inside Story along with a Guardian Journalist, and an Israeli professor of Political Science who simply repeats the usual Israeli government mantra.

The video is 22 minutes, 12 seconds long.

David Cameron accused by Labour of Iran nuclear 'gaffe'

David Cameron accused by Labour of Iran nuclear 'gaffe'

Labour has accused David Cameron of committing a gaffe by mistakenly claiming Iran has a nuclear weapon.

Asked why he was backing Turkey to join the EU, he said it could help solve the world's problems, "like the Middle East peace process, like the fact that Iran has got a nuclear weapon".

A No 10 source said the PM "misspoke", later adding he had been talking about Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons.

But Labour said he was becoming a "foreign policy klutz".

Shadow Europe Minister Chris Bryant said: "This is less of a hiccup, more of a dangerous habit.

"Considering Iran's nuclear ambitions constitute one of the most important foreign policy challenges facing us all, it is not just downright embarrassing that the prime minister has made this basic mistake, it's dangerous."

Forgetful Mullen's 'unintended consequences'

From the link:

Forgetful Mullen's 'unintended consequences'
By Kaveh L Afrasiabi

Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the United States' joint chiefs of staff, caused a media stir by revealing on Sunday that the US has prepared a plan of attack on Iran, once again reminding Tehran that "all options are on the table" and that the fury of US military might may soon descend upon Iran if it continues with its controversial nuclear program.

Link

An interesting snippet of what the article goes on to say:

It is therefore pertinent to question Mullen's passing reference to such an attack's "unintended consequences". Mullen seems to have forgotten his own insight, shared with an audience at Columbia University in April, that an attack on Iran could be "incredibly destabilizing", perhaps as much as the possession of nuclear bombs by Tehran itself.

That was then. Now, all of a sudden, the US media is inundated with hatched commentaries on "the case for attacking Iran", often by pro-Israel pundits trying to minimize the risks of an attack on Iran, some portraying this as a convenient "surgical strike" to knock off Iran's nuclear installations and thus set back Iran's program for many years.

America’s man with a plan for Iran

from the Link:

America’s man with a plan for Iran

The highest-ranking US military officer says America has a plan for thwarting Iran’s nuclear ambitions, while admitting that such a strike would “endanger the security of the region.”

Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, turned up the temperature in the Middle East several degrees when he told a US news program that America has a military plan for engaging Iran, while adding that he hoped “we don’t get to that.”

Mullen was asked by NBC’s “Meet the Press” if the US military has a devised plan for confronting Iran over its alleged nuclear weapon’s program. “We do,” Mullen replied. Yet Washington’s leading military adviser held out strong reservations over implementing such a move: “I hope we don’t get to that, but it’s an important option and it’s one that’s well understood.”

More

Admitting a strike would "endanger the security of the region", showing a supposed reluctance to see war, hoping "we don't get to that" but stating it's an option, is either one of two things. Mullen is either preparing the masses for the horrors the war will bring, or is publically warning Obama not to wage war, having failed in private.

Charlie Rose interviews Syrian President Bashar al-Assad:

In case video does not work, click here.

The video is 54 minutes long, and although it is long, it provides a long interview and gives the Syrian view of The Middle East, when the Western media usually at most only gives over 5 minutes of airwaves to an interview with somebody like the Syrian President.

So it's a rare and detailed interview, and well worth the time put aside to watch it.

The interview took place this year, and as there is a reference to John Kerry visiting Damascus, which happened on 1 April 2010, the interview took place in April.

Al-Assad mentions that in order for the US to be a honest broker in peace talks in The Middle East, it needs to be impartial, a reference to successive US Administrations supporting Israel and being anti-syrian.

He agrees with Rose that peace talks with Israel, mediated by Turkey, were "this close" to seeing an agreement over The Golan Heights being returned to Syria, telling an anecdote how Israel the next day attacked Gaza in 2008, leading to Syria breaking off negotiations in protest, and Turkey breaking off mediation talks.

Al-Assad goes on to say that talks with Israel via Turkey as mediator could continue now, and he sounds optimistic about this.

Then of course as we know, after this interview in the next month, Israel attacked the Gaza flotilla, killing Turkish citizens, leading to the worsening of Turkish-Israeli relations.

It almost seems to suggest a pattern. Syria-Israeli talks about the Golan Heights mediated by Turkey go well in 2008, only for Israel to attack Gaza, knowing full well this would lead to Syria protesting and the talks breaking off.

April 2010, Al-Assad, in an interview with Charlie Rose, voices optimisim of renewed talks with Israel about the Golan heights mediated by Turkey....

31st May 2010, Israel attacks a Gaza aid flotilla, killing and injuring Turkish citizens, leading to Turkey to break off being mediator in Israel-Syria talks, and Syria walking away in disgust at Israel.

It's almost as if Israel, whenever faced by the prospect of actually having an agreement with Syria about the Golan Heights in talks mediated by Turkey, does someting to sabotage this. In the first case in 2008, attack Gaza, upsetting Syria, in the second case in 2010, kill Turkish citizens, upsetting Turkey.

But should we be surprised? Israel annexed the Golan Heights, which is Syrian territory, and perhaps will do anything to keep them, even sabotaging a possible peace agreement with Syria that would see the Golan Heights given back to Syria.

So, Lebanon attacked the Israelis in Israel. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Beirut!!! The Blue line is farther South than real Israeli territorial borders lie anyway. The Arabs are going to get a Biblical beating here shortly if they don't stop poking the Lion.

No you seem to ignore the FACT that Israel gave Gaza to the Arabs for peace and ever since Israel has been shelled with Rockets and Mortars.

Israel put up with Hammas and their Rockets for over a year before Israel did anything to try and stop it.

Turkey sent that flotilla to Israel to do one thing and thats antagonize Israel. They knew what they were doing, Israel warned them over and over again not to try it. What happened as soon as one Israel tried to get on that boat and INSPECT it? The Arabs attacked the Israeli solider and tried to kill him.

Did you forget that or are you so blind and in love with hating Israel you simply don't care?

I ask you WHAT HAVE THE ARABS GIVEN UP FOR PEACE? The answer is NOTHING. Yassar Arafat walked out on Israel at Camp David and said no to a real lasting peace. The Arabs in Lebanon started shelling Israel when Israel tried to stop Hammas from shelling them.

Israel is not the aggressor here and anyone who thinks they are needs to go study the real facts and stop spreading Arab propaganda.

The Arabs are the largest group of cry babies in the world, blaming everyone else for their problems. They want everything handed to them, they would suck the blood out of each and every nation on earth if we let them and they are doing a good job in the U.S. and Europe.

Oh how they make us feel so bad for showing them that they had oil and how to get it out of the ground. We built that whole area from the ground up, now they want it all and what we have too. If it were not for the U.S. and Europe they would still be herding sheep in Riyadh.

The Arabs need to stop before its to late and they have NOTHING but a nuclear wasteland to call home.

Gave Gaza to the Arabs for peace? Gaza is home to those driven out of their original homes in Palestine in 1948 and 1967 and at other times, and is in general home to people forced to live in squalid conditions!

Gaza was not given for peace! It's a result of war! Occupation! The creation of refugees and the homeless. Israel has been shelled because of this, and Israel's occupation and land-grabs, it's blockades and military attacks.

Israel did nothing to encourage any possible peace talks to stop such rockets. NOTHING. It continued it's blockade and occupation, continued it's military strikes, encouraging grieviances.

Poor IDF the victim! Always the victim! Always antagonised by those nasty pesky Turkish people.

You do not inspect the aid flotillas with helicopter gunships and commandos armed to the teeth.

Armed Israeli soldiers attacked? Are they incapable of defending themselves without killing civillians left, right and centre?

The people on the aid flotilla say it was the Israelis who attacked first. But no, that could not possibly be. It was the heavily armed and trained Israeli soldiers who were the victims here, attacked by those ninja commando assassin aid activists, and the Israelis are yet again the victims.

Let's just forget the dead aid activists, riddled with bullet holes.

Did you forget that aid activists were not armed with guns and had their footage confiscated so evidence of the killings is hidden, or are you simply in love with loving Israel you simply don't care?

Arafat walked out because the peace plan put to him was of a Palestinian state carved and chopped into little pieces whose borders would be controlled by Israel.

He knew that plan was not worth the toilet paper it was written on. It was a joke.

Israel would get on better with it's neighbours if it was serious about peace, if it actually challenged Hezbollah and Hamas and Syria and Iran and neighbours further afield to peace talks as opposed to war.

Israel's whole existence is based on aggression and expansion and anyone who thinks they are not needs to go study the real facts and stop spreading Israeli propaganda.

Ah, now we come to it. Evident Anti-semetic Arabphobia and possible wider Islamophobia.

Saying that Arabs "would suck the blood" recalls of anti-Jewish propaganda in Germany in the '30s.

Oh how the Arabs complain about being invaded, occupied, subjugated and the installation of western-supported tyrants who torture and kill them. They really should just shut up and stop complaining and know what's good for them and that we are bringing them enlightening civillisation and democracy.

Look at that oil and how we got it out of the ground that no Arab could do! Never mind the fact the average Arab on the street never sees the profit of this black gold, but you know, look at that oil we gifted to them and are most certainly not stealing from under their feet!

Regardless, your pro-Israeli rant at all costs ranting is backed by your evident and hateful xenophobia towards Arabs as this example clearly shows:

Evocative of Berlin '38, ignorant and hateful of a ethnic group.

I have no time for debates and statements fuelled by racism.

Ignored.

It ties in with aims to loosen Palestinian heritage ties in Jerusalem and strengthen the Israeli claim to all the land.
