Three Geniuses Puzzle. The following puzzle is a great exercise in deduc-
tive thinking! Most people think in terms of probability, but that is an induc-
tive process. There is enough information in the text here for the front
genius (and you) to determine with certainty what color the hat is. Read it
carefully and see if you can figure out what color hat the genius in the front
is wearing. Here is a hint: with every step, ask yourself, what would the
genius need to see to know? The fact that the back and middle genius do
not know is the clue.
Three geniuses stand in a line (one behind the other). Each can
see only to the front, so the rear person can see the middle and
the front, the middle person can see the front, and the genius in
the front cannot see anyone.
You have five hats. Two are white, and three are red. You blindfold
the three geniuses, who are utterly truthful, and put a hat at
random on the head of each. Then you hide the other two hats
and remove the blindfolds.
You then ask each genius to name the color of his own hat (which
he cannot see).
The rear one says, “I don’t know.” The middle one says, “I don’t
know.” Then the front one says, “I know.”
What color is the front genius’s hat?

That would be a red hat.
The third genius didn't know his hat's color, so at least one of the other must have a red hat. (Cause if both of the guys he's looking at had white hats, he'd know his was red, right?) And if the first Einstein was wearing a white then the second guy would've known he had a red hat. So, the first guy had to have a red hat or otherwise, the very wise guy in the number two #2 spot would have known his hat's color.

Been a while since I've had to use the ole 'Sherlock Holmes' shtick of deductive logic.

Yep, I got red by the same process as the 1st person who responded.

I actually had to think about it, though, and that's after I already knew there was a definite conclusion I could come to. Most of the stuff TPTB try to pull on us, they try to do it when we aren't paying attention or with some kind of other manipulation that tries to keep us from thinking critically or being able to put 2 and 2 together. Which makes the whole thing more difficult.
