Modern Judaism did spring from the Pharisee branch of Judaism which is highly legalistic.

Eh, no. Genetic records show that the vast share of "Israel" belongs to partly European Askanazi "Jews" and Kazarian "Converts", all of them stemming back to anything but Jewish forefathers. FGS Odin may have been more Jewish, probably being from the tribe of Dan, founding the state of Denmark (Danmark or Dan's Field). But none of them can say their genealogies are clean. Only few of them have natural straight hair with natural curls by their temples. The so called "Orthodox Jews" down in that bottomless pit typically curl their temple horns using curling irons. Why should we let them occupy more land than their aquired tribe once got by lotts? Take Joshua's borders and draw out the land of Jews (Judah) and you see the outline of Jesjuah ha Mesjiah as we know him. [snipped some rather hateful swada, sorry]

Regardless of genetics their Theology is from Pharisees and the Babylonian Talmud.

If the Sadducees won out Jews wouldn't believe in an afterlife or resurrection of the dead. They also denied the Oral Law.

Amazing how things could have been if one sect won out over the other.

The Pharicees wern't really a sect, the way we understand the word, but a political party. They were actually quite radical compared to Jesjuah's orthodox views on the Law, how he claimed Mosjeh's Torah was tough enough, without sharlatans adding weight to the burden of the people. There are actually biblical scholars who claim Jesjuah was a Pharicee until he broke out of their party and started on his own. The Pharicees claimed the oral Babylonic Talmudian laws should be followed. One example is the referances to their additional Shabbath laws, where just about anything was concidered labour, and was restricted. For instance Jesjuah probably had this desception in mind when he every Sabbath he was in Jerusalem is said to have walked the maximum allowed distance to walk on a Shabbath -- from the city centre out to Mt. Olives. Neither did he concider healing on the Sabbath unlawful, since it was the work of God, and grinding corns in one's hand etc.
