I'm afraid that this event devastated that region of Haiti: given the magnitude and the depht of the shake, and given the way many houses were built there, there's to think the worst: it is also being reported that many of the strongest building collapsed, this is really concerning. It's even more sad whenever it happens to people already suffering for many other reasons, it breakes my heart
My thoughts go to those poor people.
In these moments it's very important to get there as soon as possible, it's important to restore the phone lines because informations can be very valuable for the rescuers, it's important that everyone does what he/she can but on top on that, it's important that the survivors trapped under debris won't give up.

L.A. County fire rescue team prepares to deploy to Haiti earthquake

A specialized rescue unit from the Los Angeles County Fire Department is preparing for deployment to Haiti following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Caribbean island nation earlier today, officials said.
The 72-member heavy rescue task force received a request for help from the U.S. Agency for International Development and is gathering at a staging area in Pomona, county fire officials said.
The team includes paramedics, search dogs, communication specialists and rescuers who are trained in combing through collapsed structures to find victims.
The rescuers rely on sophisticated detection devices and equipment capable of shoring weakened structures and moving heavy chunks of rubble, officials said.
Relief officials said they were preparing for substantial damage and casualties after Haiti was rocked by the quake, the largest to ever strike the region.

I wish that the world were at a place where all soldiers could lay their weapons down and be deployed to help in situations like this.

I don't even have words for how helpless I feel to help in situations like this, other than donations.

By the way, is it normal to have that many aftershocks of that size?

edited to add third line

This is horrible, I don't understand why it had to be Haiti ... of all places that is the absolute worst place for this kind of event.

I can also guarantee you that their will be a US Navy task force filled with supplies offshore by tomorrow morning.

Any official word on the number of casualties? Port Au Prince is a very very densely populated area, I wouldn't be surprised if the number of dead exceed 10,000+ mark

The dust hasn't even settled yet. We probably wont see an official number for at least a week, if not more. All we can possibly get now is estimates.

Oh gosh, i've only just woken up to see this. I've been checking for a big one each morning, but i never wanted to wake up to find this. It's heartbreaking. I can only help that all forms of aid get their quick and the death doll not be as big as well all fear. My heart goes out to those poor people, it's the last thing they deserve!
I'll hopefully be donating what i can come payday.

So, so many aftershocks cannot be helping restore calm and at the size they are they would have to be hampering rescue attempts:

I hope the special task force from LA has nothing to do with the FEMA earthqauke training that was sched. for jan 20 ... timing is ironic...

why does something bad always happen to people who do not deserve it .

Prayers to all the good Haitian

We were in a tsunami watch for about an hour from this event.

I've just spent the past two hours trying to reach a friend of mind in the DR. No answer, although that's not unusual in itself. What is unusual is that there is no connection there -- no ring, no nothing.

The folks of Haiti sure don't need this. Storms that I wouldn't even stay home for kill many people there. Very spotty info on MSM.

when I feel helpless to help, I pray.

wow, this is just out of hand.

That many 5+ aftershocks?

I must admit, I am perplexed by this.

I am literally in tears here guys, we are looking at at LEAST 50-125k deaths.

Out of 2million population in Port Au Prince, that means only 1 out of 20 people become a casualty.

What is the real ratio though, based on this level of unprecedented devastation I will have to conclude the #'s may be higher.

I refuse to even speculate over 125k as I pray that my estimate is way overblown and a poor estimate, even though I know it's a good estimate now in my gut.

We won't know the real numbers until next week or so, sadly. Possibly longer than that.

Unfortunatly Muzzleflash, I fear you may be correct sadly. Haiti is a 3rd world country ... they do not have many hospitals (and the few they do have are either now in ruins or can't handle mass casualty incidents), they have a barely functioning police force (that also serves as the army), I don't even want to speculate on firefighting and emergency medical services. I doubt they even have any working communications ... assuming they even have a working disaster response plan.

In short, this is disaster of biblical proportions. Of all people on Earth, the Haitians did not need this disaster.

Much agreed. This isnt the time or place to try and turn this into an argument on bible based prophecies. How about sending a prayer instead?

Another 4.8 just now..

Anyone know how long these will last and if they are doing any more damage than what's already been done?
