I'm a gamer. I've killed tens of thousands of virtual people. I've ran them over with vehicles, shot them, burned them, crushed them, poisoned them
etc, etc, etc. If the anti-gaming goons were right, I should be a criminal with a few convictions under by belt... yet... I am one of the most law
abiding people I know. In fact, I have a moral standard that is above the social norm. What's more, I don't try to force my views on others.
Edit: By the way, I've been murdering virtual people since I was a child.
Would I say violent games are harmful? In and of themselves, no. The line between fantasy and reality is pretty well defined. However, if someone
happens to have a less well defined boundary between the two, then ANYTHING can be harmful to them. Games, music, television, books, and even day
dreams. I think children have naturally less defined lines, so obviously they shouldn't be allowed to play adult themed games. The label has a
rating, parents need to be parents instead of pawning those responsibilities off to computers and televisions. I'd imagine, for an adult, releasing
stress through these video games would be more beneficial than getting in to a fight or turning to alcohol or drugs.
The same with Pornography. Humans are sexual creatures. Sexual tension builds and needs to be released. I'd rather billions of men masturbate to
pornography than get stressed enough to act in ways they wouldn't normally. Repression only works for so long before it boils over. Imperfect
creatures, that we are. If you're so concerned with porn degrading women... sex is being sold everywhere in magazines, ads, and commercials. They're
being used for their bodies.
Unfortunately, unchanging social views are a problem with both. The porn industry is a disaster, filled with drugs (legal and other wise) and several
other unpleasant things. But because of the way society is about porn, it's forced in to a "back door, dark ally" sort of environment. Many people
want their porn fix, but publicly rant and rave about the "evils". Someone is spending billions of dollars in the US on this stuff, so it's
ridiculous to pretend it doesn't exist or only exists for the minority. Because of that approach, the porn industry is allowed to be a dark
With video games, people tend to view it like the "old days". Where the games were all family appropriate and a flat goomba or a spinning turtle
shell rolling around was the worst it had. Video games have matured in such a way and been divided so than kids have their games and adults have
theirs. If the parent can't tell the difference (especially since violent video games make it obvious about the content) or refuses to deal with it,
why exactly do we blame everyone but the parent?
We blamed books for turning kids bad. We blamed comics for turning kids bad. We blamed music for turning kids bad. We blamed television for turning
kids bad. We blamed video games for turning kids bad. We blamed porn for turning kids bad. We've missed the mark so many times, so we'll keep
blaming everything we can. Parenting is a major issue. Most families can't survive on 1 income. Both parents usually have to work. What's more, both
parents are probably working full time 40hr a week jobs. They likely can't survive any other way.
edit: To add, with so many work hours... where's the time to spend doing the actual parenting? I'm tired after work. I can't imagine having the
energy dealing with kids. So who's raising the children? Who's listening to their problems and guiding them?
Someone has to scoop cow crap. Someone has to pick up the trash. Someone has to work in the mines. Someone has to do the worst jobs in the country.
Unfortunately, our society needs a bottom rung on the ladder. Tragically, it's something else that's treated like a dark secret to make everyone
feel better. "You can all grow up to be whatever you WANT!!" Yes, because the school janitor always fantasized about how awesome it would be to mop
up the vomit at lunch time. Crappy low paying jobs need to be filled. Pointing the finger at entertainment isn't going to help. I'm pretty sure the
problem runs quite a bit deeper than if little jonny is playing call of duty or if little michelle is watching american idol.
Edit: To add, our society works a certain way. Right or wrong, it's a system we use without thinking. When society fails, I believe all of us are
ultimately responsible for being so complacent.
