I'm taking an economics class... most of what are called "free-trade agreements" actually are government central planning programs in disguise.
These "free-trade agreements" are really mass protectionist programs-- like NAFTA-- which really protects the countries Mexico, the United States
and Canada from international competition. It shelters them off from everyone else and is more like a socialist planning program for those three
countries.
Individual governments use protectionist policies to hamper the benefits of international trade. They make prices of international goods higher to "protect their industries". Governments control the rate of exchanges between themselves. the WTO-- is not a benevolent organization that helps promote free trade throughout the world. It in fact promotes managed trade... and helps promote rules to enforce manage trade. It enforces minimum wage laws in lesser advanced countries forcing companies to pay more than they can afford.
Just how have these managed trade promoters been passed off as free-traders? These people who claim to promote free-trade are not really promoting free-trade... but they're promoting managed trade. Any time you see the word "free trade agreement" you can bet that it's the exact opposite.

I guess so. I've come to the conclusion that anything that's government related with the term free-trade agreement really is just a massive economic protectionism program for those involved. They do nothing for the good of the international community. It only suffocates potential trade and enforces the trade to happen mainly along those countries (as opposed to others).
I also see what you're saying though. There is a lot of double speak out there all the time. It's like how the economic recovery plan... was actually a centralization of certain businesses of our economy... or how like the no child left behind act leaves everyone behind, or, how the patriot act doesn't protect our freedoms.
