Heres my question. Could the government be using our computers webcams and microphones to keep track of americans? They already use cameras on interstates and other areas so whats stopping them from doing this?

Nothing is stopping them whatsoever

I don’t see why they wouldn’t be doing this either when IMO they so clearly can.

Oh and not just Americans but at least the British aswell, our government just loves watching us.

Back in the early 1990s, it was discovered that microphones and webcams were turned on to openly share and be remotely accessible at the hardware level. Every Operating System vendor quickly produced a patch that rendered this hardware flaw inaccessible. However, as the problem was addressed and resolved at the OSI level, the hardware manufacturers never changed their spec, and the hardware flaw still remains to this day.

So, if one were to find a way to circumvent the Operating System that has plugged this hole, then yes, it is possible for someone to use the microphones and webcams connected to a computer to monitor the user.

(And, some tin-foil hat wearing individuals have often suggested that Microsoft themselves have exploited this in the past to spy on individuals of interest...so it's not unreasonable to believe that a government could exploit the same!)

So, in my opinion it is indeed possible, although I don't believe it to be probable...unless there is a reason the NSA would be interested in what you are doing saying or doing in front of the computer.

As far as microsoft is concerned they are A.) Entirely and in secret ran by the government. B.) Have formed a sort of government superpower of their own. I mean they produce the things that are now (in the minds of people) necessary to sustain normal life. so yea... damn them all...

Even when the technology does exist with certain capabilities, it doesn't translate into any actual set of actions simply because the non-technical practical issues tend to make the actions (in this case spying on everyone) impossible or impracticable.

For example, back in the 1990s, a company I managed was approached by a government agency with the following problem. Cell phones had become the communication medium of choice for drug dealers etc. Since cell phone conversations were not covered under privacy laws of the time (they were deemed broadcasts and not phone calls), this agency had invested million upon millions of dollars to record every single cell phone conversation they could in the US.

The problem was the hundreds of millions of hours of conversation they recorded were useless since there was not enough manpower to sift thorough the innocuous 99% of the recordings ("So then I said to him that no man of mine is going to forget my anniversary and you know what that jerk said..") so they came to us to acoustically filter out only those conversations that dealt with drugs.

A large lucrative contract was offered if we would adapt our prototype technology to do this specific task. We pointed out that since the drug dealers were concerned about actual people listening in, they never said anything like "I have coc aine for sale," instead they used code words like "I'm having a potluck tonight." So if we did filter these terms out, we probably would only catch people like police officers talking about making a coc aine bust. They left unhappy and (sadly) will all that money.

So just suppose that the government could tape all those people in front of web cams and tvs, what would they see? Billions of hours of young men surfing for porn, teenage girls chatting on MSN and updating facebook, people playing video games, eating junk food and falling asleep while watching American Idol. And who gets the delightful job of filtering through all of this junk? Couldn't pay me enough to do it.

So the technology may exist, but the idea that it translates into a massive nation wide spying ring, no going to happen for pragmatic reasons. Let s face it, when gov't can't connect the dots htey have, the last thing they need is a technology that produces more dots.

Now, using the technology for highly targeted intelligence operations on preselected targets -- that is a whole other issue.

I am sure they do and here is the easiest way to fix it that I know how, Unplug the internet, they can spy on you now(Patriot Act) so make it harder for them to, when your not on the Net turn off and Unplug your router.

You mean our government? The good ole U.S. of an A.? Sheeple Porn to some alphabet soup agency, located in the bowels of some super, ultra secret base? Hmm! Why do you think there was a huge push for digital TV? Camera's and microphones in the TV sets? Internet and telephone calls monitored by NSA? Probably have a voice print analysis with your name on it in some top secret computer? Why would they want to watch me, you may ask? I've got nothing to hide. I'm mean I eat, sleep work, eat, sleep work just like the next Prole. Why would they do that? BECAUSE THEY CAN! That's why I've adopted my own strategy. I squeeze my "fat sausage like frame" into ladies undergarments when I sit on the couch to watch the Prole feed on T.V. !!!
