It's all a matter of relativity.

Relative to Earth, we (people) move at about 1,200 kilometers per hour, depending on your latitude (0 at the poles). Now, relative to the sun, Earth moves at about 100,000 KPH. But relative to nearby stars, the sun (thus the solar system) moves at 70,000 KPH. The best part of it all, our solar system is moving at an astounding 800,000 KPH relative to the center of the galaxy! Even then it takes 230 million earth years to make one galactic year!

I don't want you to believe that all the stars are moving constantly in the same direction, on the contrary we're really just floating around randomly in the galaxy, but relative to each other we can determine speed.
